We the family of Marie Elizabeth MacNeil regret to announce her passing on Aug. 17, 2015, at the age of 100, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility.
Born on Feb. 15, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Annie MacNeil. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
During the Great Depression, Marie moved to Boston, Mass., to seek employment. She worked as housekeeper for a doctor and as a personal caregiver for his wife. In 1974 she retired and moved back to the street on which she had grown up, Lamond Street in Sydney Mines. She lived a long and fulfilling life, and will be missed.
Marie is survived by nieces, Carol Pizzano, Malden, Mass.; Marie Wortman, Wilmington, Mass.; Barbara St. George, Asheville, N.C.; Nancy (Ed) Mack, Savannah GA; nephews, Michael (Penelope) Wortman, Asheville, N.C., and William (Barbara) Wortman, Melrose, Mass. Marie's nieces and nephews knew her fondly as "Auntie Ree."
Marie was predeceased by her parents, as well as by her sister, Mary Ann MacNeil Wortman, who died in 1968.
Visitation will take place at Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home, 10 Clyde Ave., Sydney Mines, on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2015 from 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Aug. 24, 2015 at Holy Family Church, Main Street,, Sydney Mines with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Marie’s memory may be made to a charity of choice.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility for the tender ministrations Marie received while she was in their care.
