95, SYDNEY MINES
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hazel Irene Gordon, 95, on Monday, May 27, 2013 at Harbourview Hospital, with her loving family by her side.
Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Wallace and Edwina (Forsey) Poole.
She was a member of Trinity Anglican Church and was made an Honorary Member of the Parish Council in 2004.
Hazel was active in volunteer work for many years. She was a member of the Harbourview Foundation Board of Directors and was instrumental in helping to get the Miners Memorial Manor built, where she was also a Board member. She was a Past President of the VON Northside Branch. She was a Past District President and Past Noble Grand of Cann Rebekah Lodge, No. 57; Past President of Miners Memorial Auxiliary; Past President of Harbourview Hospital Auxiliary; Past President of the Northside Cove Auxiliary and Past President of Trinity Anglican Church Women’s Guild. Hazel was Cub Master of Trinity Church Cub Pack and also District Cub Master. Besides her love for volunteer work, Hazel was an avid camper and thoroughly enjoyed her summers at Seal Island and St. Ann’s Trailer Parks.
Hazel is survived by her two daughters, Betty Lou (Brian) Munro, Grimsby, Ontario and Edwina Boyd, Sydney Mines; her daughter-in-law, Betty Gordon, Bridgewater; grandchildren, Joanne, Paula, Michael, Bobby, Breanne, Lara and Ashley; 11 great grandchildren; and sister, Mabel Batchilder, Barrie, Ontario, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
Hazel was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Gordon; son, Dr. Robert Gordon; brothers Wallace, George and Leroy; sisters Alice, Magdalene, Dora, Hilda, Vera, and Winnie.
The family would like to thank the staff of Harbourview Hospital and, in particular, the nursing staff of the Veteran Wing, who treat their residents with compassion and respect, and over the past 3 years have treated our mother as if she was one of their own.
Visitation will be at Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines, on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at 2-4 and 7-9. The funeral will be held at Trinity Anglican Church, Queen Street, Sydney Mines, on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Arthur Nash and Rev. Stacey Lemoine officiating. Burial to follow at Trinity Church Cemetery, Shore Road, Sydney Mines.
