It is with broken hearts that the family of Elmer 'Soup' Devoe announce his passing on February 16, 2023 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by his loved ones, after battling cancer for the past 3 years. We want to thank everyone at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital who was involved in his care, with a special thanks to ICU for providing compassion during his last days.
Elmer was a true family man, loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and brother. He leaves behind his wife Mary and his children, his girls, Vanessa, Charity (Jimmy), Chastity (Frank) and his only son and best friend Matthew (Ashley). Also left behind are his grandchildren, who provided him with so much joy; TJ, Violet, Lilah, Morgan, Abel and Hayes as well as fur babies Mazie and Bella. He leaves his loving family members, mother Stella and sisters and brothers; Sherman, Melvin (Darlene), Cathy (Dave), Paulette (Brian) and Walter (Andre).
Elmer was predeceased by his father Albert, twin brother Ernest and sister Jeannie.
He was a true family man who held the family together with his constant jokes. He loved to laugh and was affectionately known as a tormenter. Elmer was an avid antique car lover and true lover of mopar, always saying, "parking for Dodges only in my yard." Elmer was constantly on the go and he enjoyed his morning coffee with the boys at Tim Hortons. Elmer loved his time in the highlands, camping and fishing and took every opportunity to go in the summer. Elmer will race on in our hearts forever!
Elmer's wish was to have a short wake followed by a private service for his immediate family. A visitation will take place on Tuesday, February 21 from 1-3pm at Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home, 8 Clyde Avenue, Sydney Mines with a reception at the Bras d'Or Seniors Pensioners Club starting at 3:30pm. Burial to take place at a later date in Trinity Anglican Cemetery, Sydney Mines. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Elmer may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre or the SPCA.
