Born in Cranston RI., son of the late W. Seymour Gray Sr. and the late Nathalie (Pottle) Gray. He move to Somerset in his youth and was a graduate of Somerset High School Class of 1937, and later attended the University of Maryland.
After graduation he worked in his father’s typewriter shop until Oct. 1940 when he enlisted into the Army, seeing service during World War II and Korea. After basic training at Fort Devens, he was assigned to headquarters of the 1st Army in Boston. He then served as a military attaché with the US Embassy in LaPaz, Bolivia. Then he was assigned to Trinity College in Hartford, as a professor of Military Science in the ROTC program. While serving at Mitchell Air Force Base he was assigned to the Selective Service as an Air Force advisor for officers assigned to the system. Upon his return he was assigned to Hickman Air Force Base in Hawaii, and was one of the first enlisted men to be promoted to Chief E-9. His service career ended with his retirement on June 30, 1961. He relocated with his family to Somerset, and re-entered the business owned by his father. An avid golfer he was a member of the Fall River Country Club, and served as president for two terms. His single most accomplishment was changing the course from nine to eighteen holes. He was club champion twice. He was a member of the Air Force Sergeant Association, US Golf Association and the Scottish Right Shrine, where he was a 32degree Shriner and a member of the Palestine Temple of RI.
Surviving: two daughters Pamela Jervey and her husband William of Charlestown, MA and Nathalie Dearman and her husband Bill of Glasgow, KY, one step son Brian McGuigan and his wife Allison of Paonia, CO, one brother Donald Gray of Newport, RI, three grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was also brother of the late Alyce Cheetham and Kenneth Gray.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation on Tues. July 10, 2012 from 10:30 – 11:30AM in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE AT BIRCHCREST, 189 Gardners Neck Road, Swansea, followed by burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Fall River.
