Wallace Sunderland Sr., “Captain Wally,” age 85, of Swansea, passed away Saturday, February 13, 2016 in Charlton Memorial Hospital. Born in Fall River, a son of the late Albert and Bertha (Moss) Sunderland, he was a longtime resident of Swansea.
A graduate of Joseph Case High School, class of 1949, he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education from Springfield College and worked as a teacher at Westport High School. He also worked as a Boat Captain on sight-seeing tours in Bonita Springs Florida and on the Taunton River before retiring in 2002.
Mr. Sunderland loved spending his time on the water and building and sailing boats.
He is survived by three children, Gail Lawlor and her husband Thomas Lawlor III of Swansea, Wallace “Sandy” Sunderland Jr., and his wife Barbara of Newville, AL, Jane Andrews and her husband Jim of Bonita Springs, FL; one brother, Albert Sunderland, Jr. and his wife Joyce; four grandchildren, Kristin Kennedy, Thomas Lawlor IV, Christine and Kara Andrews, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces. He was grandfather of the late Kathleen Lawlor.
