Born in Fall River, MA, as the youngest of four children to James Smith and Florence Smith, Bob graduated from BMC Durfee High School in 1944 and enlisted in the US Navy. He served stateside as a Hospital Apprentice, 1st class, until his honorable discharge in 1946. Graduating from Bradford Durfee Technical Institute (now UMass Dartmouth) in 1951, he worked as a civil engineer, eventually becoming the Director of the Department of Highway Engineering for District 7.
Bob loved the Red Sox and his 4:00p.m. glass of gin, but loved nothing in life more than his wife, Joy(Couture) Smith, of Westport/Swansea. They were married in 1952, and had two daughters, Lori and Lynn. Bob and Joy enjoyed golfing together, and were members of Segregansett Country Club, and later, Touisset Country Club. They also enjoyed cycling, especially along the Cape Cod Canal. Bob will be greatly missed by his family including his wife Joy, his daughters, 4 granddaughters, and 9 great-grandchildren.

Funeral and burial will be private.
