Manuel “Mal” Furtado, age 89, of Swansea, passed away Thursday, November 3, 2016 at his residence. He was the husband of Adeline “Bunny” (Medeiros) Furtado to whom he has been married for the past 69 years.
Born in Fall River, a son of the late Jacintho and Edelina (Rodriques) Furtado, he had been a resident of Swansea since 1954.
A Veteran of the United States Army, he served during World War II as a Staff Sergeant. He was a Sales Representative for both Grossman’s Lumber in New Bedford and Almeida Electric in Fall River for many years before retiring in 1990.
An avid skier, he enjoyed golfing, riding his bicycle, traveling, and most of all spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter-in-law; Lori Furtado of Crofton, MD, two grandsons; Andrew S. Furtado and his wife Jamie of Crofton, MD, Eric G. Furtado and his wife Christina of Sun Prairie, WI, three great-grandchildren; Cayley, Christopher, Addison, one sister; Dorothy Pimental of Swansea, caregiver; Pamela St. John of Lincoln, RI, and several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Glenn A. Furtado and brother of the late Mary “Mae” Medeiros, Alice Hunt, and Irene Silva.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the home health aides from “Happier in my Home” and the staff of Steward Home and Hospice Care for the great care they all provided to Mal and his family over the past few months.
His Funeral will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at 8:00AM from the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Birchcrest, 189 Gardners Neck Rd., Swansea, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00AM in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 530 Gardners Neck Rd., Swansea. Visiting hours prior to his Mass from 8:00 to 9:30AM in the Funeral Home. Contributions in his honor may be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101. Entombment in Notre Dame Cemetery Mausoleum, Fall River.
