Joseph M. Bushell, age 83, of Swansea, passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Maureen E. (Griffin) Bushell to whom he had been married 59 years.
Born in Fall River, a son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Dailey) Bushell, he was a graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School, Class of 1959. Joseph proudly served his country in the National Guard during the Vietnam War and went on to become the owner and operator of Cummings and Bushell Auto Supply in Fall River for 10 years. He was also a Purchasing Agent for the Sherriff’s Department.
An avid baseball fan, Joseph was proud to have played on what is believed to be the original little league team in Fall River, later becoming a coach in both Swansea and Fall River. He was a member of the Friends of the Cardinals and a coach for the Swansea Basketball League. In his free time, Joseph graciously volunteered at St. Anne’s Hospital for 15 years.
Besides his wife, Joseph is survived by three sons, Joseph M. Bushell, Jr. and his wife Maria, David W. Bushell and his wife Valerie, all of Swansea and Michael J. Bushell and his wife Renay of Rehoboth; seven grandchildren, Griffin Bushell, Julia Bushell, Jack Andrew Bushell and his wife Demetra, Mikayla Bushell, Abigail Correira and her husband Arthur, Colin Bushell and Mitchell Bushell; one great-grandson, Logan Correira, as well as many nieces and nephews.
His Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at 9:00 AM from the Waring-Sullivan Home at Birchcrest, 189 Gardners Neck Rd., Swansea followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 530 Gardners Neck Rd., Swansea. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joseph’s honor may be made to the Case High Scholarship Trust, PO Box 33, Swansea, MA 02777.
