John Nowell

Born in Fall River the son of the late John P. and Ruth (Turner) Nowell he was a resident of Rehoboth, MA for 69 years.

A graduate of Moses Brown he earned a full scholarship to MIT. While attending MIT he enlisted as a Staff Sergeant for the US Army and was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster for his service in the Pacific Theater of Operations during WWII.

A graduate of Brown University, earning his Bachelor of Science in Engineering in 1948 he was proud to hold the Rhode Island licenses of a Licensed Professional Engineer, a PE Certificate of Authorization and a Professional Land Surveyor. Mr. Nowell maintained his licenses well into his 80’s. He was an active member of the Brown University Alumni Association; he served on the Rehoboth School Committee for 3 years, and participated on the Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School Building Committee. In 1978 he began his tenure at the former Citizen’s Union Bank, now BayCoast Bank, as a Corporator, then a Trustee and went on to serve on the Advisory Board from 1999 to the present. An avid hiker, he was a trail guide for the Appalachian Mountain Club for many years; he climbed the 4 peaks of the Presidential Range with his wife and completed the 64 New England peaks officially listed at over 4,000 feet in elevation with his youngest son, Richard. Having obtained his pilot’s license in 1962 he enjoyed flying. He also enjoyed cross country and telemark skiing as well as sailing.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his one daughter, Sharon Friedman and her wife Marcia Szymanski of Mansfield, MA; three sons, Gregory Nowell of Westport Point, MA, Peter Nowell and his wife Elisa Giaquinto of Searsport, ME and Providence, RI and Richard Nowell of Framingham, MA; and grandchildren, Esther Friedman, Nate Lerner and his wife Rachel, Cody Nowell and her husband Reid Schwartz and Elijah Berg.
