November 2, 1955 – January 12, 2014
Rick suddenly and unexpectedly left us on January 12, 2014 at age 58. He is survived by his mother Lonnie and siblings Randy, Debbie (Howard), Rob (Colleen), nieces and nephews Cory, Megan, Kelsey, and Nicholas, and his great-nephews Kaedon and Ezra. He is predeceased by his father Norman (2013). Rick grew up in the Guildford area of Surrey. He graduated from North Surrey Secondary School in 1973. It was there that he met lifelong friends through the music program, fueled by the energy of music teachers Murray and Springer. Rick was passionate about music and used his “big” voice in numerous musical theatre productions over the years. Rick was full of life. He loved his city, Vancouver, and actively followed its growth and evolution. He loved nothing better than to take his sibs and friends on a walking tour of the city. He was especially knowledgeable of the history and architecture of the city. Many a night was spent debating civic politics over a fine scotch and cigar. Rick loved his West End community and the Friday nights and Sunday afternoons with the boys at the “Pumps”. His summer was planned around Pride and the Fireworks festivals. Rick’s annual road trip with best friend Allan was the highlight of the year. The two would travel, after extensive planning, the western US exploring the national parks, geological formations, and hiking trails. Rick loved all things natural, especially his geodes and orchids. Rick was happy and at peace with his place in the world. He loved and was loved by family and friends. He will be missed. A Celebration of Rick’s life will be held 1 pm, Saturday, January 25, 2014 at Victory Memorial Park Funeral Centre, 14831 28th Ave. Surrey. All Rick’s friends are welcome.
