Helen June Smith

Helen June Smith was born on Saturday November 11, 1933 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to John and Jean Scarr. Her siblings included: Joan Mahugh, Joyce Wagner, John Scarr, David Scarr, Willian [Bill] Scarr, Maurice Scarr, Marilyn High, Margaret Pfanner and Elinor Black. Helen was predeceased by her parents and all her siblings save her younger sister Margaret.

Helen principally stayed home raising her children, often helping at the church in children's ministry and women's ministry. In Kinburn, Ontario she was taught by the ladies' group what became her life long passion of quilts. Helen loved to make quilts for her family and later for her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Later in life, when alone, Helen worked at Gold's Fabric store in North Vancouver, BC and then at the Broadway Lodge [1984] in Vancouver in the housekeeping department, until her retirement in 1998. It was just prior to this that Helen met Alton Smith and on February 14, 1998 they were married and resided in Langley, BC until Helen moved into Nicola Lodge care home in Port Coquitlam. They were together for over 25 years.

Helen's surest foundation was her faith and trust in her Saviour Jesus Christ. He was the anchor that gave her strength and endurance to finish her race well. Helen's children were big in her heart and what she would describe as her greatest accomplishment in life. She was fully devoted to them and supported them in any way she could.

Helen is survived by her husband Alton Smith, her children Stephen [Susan] Knoll of Coeur d'Alene, ID, Ruth [Doug] Madge of Port Coquitlam, BC, Andrew [Christine] Knoll of Port Coquitlam, BC, Step-daughter Sheila [Jerry] St. Laurent of Abbotsford, BC, her grandchildren Christopher [Laura] Madge of Calgary, AB, Jason [Nikohl] of Maple Ridge, BC, Kevin [Kendra] Madge of Pitt Meadows, BC, Lindsey [Shane] Harwood of Cody, WY, Luke [Jessica] Knoll of Longview, WA, Michelle Knoll of Port Coquitlam, BC, and Natalie Knoll of Port Coquitlam, BC. Her surviving step-grandchildren are Christine St. Laurent of Vancouver and Zak St. Laurent of Vancouver Island. She is also proudly survived by her great grandchildren Amber Wilding, Micah Madge, Mikayla Madge, Olivia Harwood, Ellie Harwood, Norah Knoll, Zoey Knoll, Sterling Harwood, Seth Knoll and Wesley Madge.

Helen will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She has been a rock of support to her entire family! To her we echo the words in the gospel of Matthew - "well done good and faithful servant."
