George Vander Woude was born April 5, 1935 in Bergschenhoek in the Netherlands to Roelof and Jeltje Vander Woude. He is survived by his brother John and is predeceased by both of his parents, his only sister Jenny, and his brothers Henk, Rits, and Eelco. He was educated in the Netherlands as an architect. He immigrated to Canada in 1952 with his parents and siblings. The family settled in Ladner, BC where they worked on a dairy farm. Later, he began his Amway business and eventually found permanent employment as a cabinet maker.
He was married to his wife Janet for almost 47 years. Janet got a package deal with two children, Shirley and Carolyn. They made their home in Surrey, with George continuing his cabinet making employment and Janet working as a dental receptionist.
George was a leader in the community. He served on the Christian school board, contributed to the foundation of Elim, and avidly promoted the Christian Heritage Party. He also volunteered at the Bibles for Missions thrift store for 15 years.
George was a devoted gardener. His garden and lawn showed his passion because they were always immaculate. He would sell his plants and produce to businesses, neighbours, and passers-by. Once he moved to Elim, he even taught his neighbours how to garden.
George enjoyed playing the accordion and often, on a Sunday evening, he would play while his two girls danced around the coffee table in the living room. His grandchildren also got to enjoy his playing.
George had a very strong faith in God. He was a faithful, constant member of his church, and could be counted on to lead the congregation in singing with his clear tenor voice.
After a short hospital stay, George passed away from cancer. He leaves behind his wife, Janet, his daughters Shirley (Ralph) Madsen and Carolyn (Dirk) Vander Vorst, his grandchildren Erik (Jenna), Rebecca (Derek), Kevan, Hannah, Jesse, Lydia, and Luke (2002—2021), and his great-grandchildren Declan, Cora, Parker, and Mackenzie.
“Don’t worry about tomorrow. Just be very good today. The Lord is right beside you. He will guide you all the way!”
