My dear Charles,

You were my husband and friend for 52 years, and at this moment my heart is breaking because you are no longer with me. 

I always believed that we would be together forever and suddenly you are gone. I am surrounded by our children and grandchildren, our family and our friends, but it doesn't change the fact that you are not here beside me, and without you here part of me will always be alone. 

Do you remember the night we met at the dancing in Glasgow. I knew right away that we would be together, and so we were for so many incredible and wonderful years. I think you always knew that you were the only man for me, but how I wish to turn back the clock for a brief moment to tell you one last time that I love you and will always love you. 

You were so much of my life that it can never be the same without you, and there is an emptiness now that I know will never go away. But there is also a happiness and contentment in knowing I was able to spend so much of my life with you, and that in my heart and on the faces of our grandchildren you will always be alive for me.

From the moment we met I knew you were the one, that I would happily spend my life with you and that we would have a family and a home together. We built that family together and we built that home, and along the way there were some struggles but there was always joy, love and togetherness in that home and in our family.

You gave me a lifetime of great memories and you made my dreams come true. I will always cherish the life we had together, but Charles how I miss you. 

You were a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and there was never any question or doubt as to your qualities as a man. I couldn't have wished for a better partner to spend my life with.

We will always be together in my heart. Forever your wife and friend.

Dear Dad,
I miss you so much. You were my rock, always there for me. You never let me or Aidan down and I knew how much you loved us. Thank you for helping me shape Aidan into the lovely, caring boy he is today. He is so much like his Grandpa; smart, fair, honest, curious about life with a pursuit of knowledge that greatly resembles his dear old Grandpa. I feel so blessed to have you as a Dad. Our relationship has changed now, I don't see you everyday anymore but I see you in my thoughts and know my rock will always be there.

Grandpa,
I loved you when you were alive and I will never forget you now that you are gone. Though you have left this earth a part of you will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew you. 

You were a great man and it pained me to see you in the state you were in at the end, but even in that state you still taught me things, including a value that you have been trying to instill in me since I was very young. That value was to question everything around me and to always strive to find the right answer even if it is not the easy or popular one.

For that, and the million other things you taught, helped, and did for me, I thank you.

Dearest Joyce and family,
We're so grateful that Charles came into our lives. He was very loved and we appreciated his friendship. He will be in our hearts always.

It is so difficult in a short tribute to capture the essence of my dad, his immense intellectual gifts, his unwavering commitment to family, his unconditional love, and his boundless curiosity. I can only try to share what he meant to me and hope that in so doing, I honour the most wonderful father in the world.     
My dad sought continuously to understand, and to learn.  He was my most influential teacher and most trusted advisor.  He spent countless hours with me as a child sharing books and ideas.  He encouraged me and challenged me.  Most importantly he believed in me.  For this I am eternally grateful.  
It is in his unconditional love and committment to family that my dad's true character is perhaps best exemplified.  And it is in his relationships with his grandchildren, Liam, Kiera, Shonagh and Aidan, that it is best demonstrated.  He devoted the final part of his life to caring for, teaching and loving these children.  He protected them fiercely.  He respected their unique personalities and gifts.  And he was always there for them.  Nothing was too much to ask.  He was a constant fixture at their school and activities.  I am so very grateful they had the opportunity to know and to love such a wonderful grandfather. 
I want so much to find a way to share just how special my dad was.  Yet it seems truly impossible to do.  Let it suffice to say that for me, he was the very embodiment of love, commitment and family.  That he was without question a man of honour.  That he always did what was right, and implored us to do so also.  That he was honest beyond question, and trustworthy beyond measure. 
I want to say "thank you" to my dad.   Thank you for a lifetime of love.  I am forever grateful.  You were truly one of a kind and the greatest man I have ever known.  You will live in my heart forever.

May you be blessed with many wonderful memories of Charles.  It was a real pleasure to have known him.

Just thought I'd share a nice memory I have of your dad. On one of his many trips to Glasgow I and him headed to Celtic Park to see a game, on the way there he got me go on a detour round all the places he and the rest of the family had stayed many years ago. It was lovely to hear the stories from him about growing up in Glasgow and the streets they all stayed in :-) Think we won the game too....haha.......lovely way to spend the day :-)

Diane & Karen, my earliest memory of your Dad was in a room full of tutus, little ballerinas and proud moms.  And there he sat each and every week, watching his grand-daughter pirouette around the dance floor.  A proud and wonderful grandpa he was!   My love to Joyce, and to all of the grandchildren who enriched his life and made all of his days wonderful!
