Sharing from Josiah Poon (brother) at Bethany’s memorial:

“Our mother would often say that Bethany and I would be best friends - in another life - if we weren't brother and sister. This is to say that over the years, we fought a lot - on the mat, off the mat, anywhere, anytime. Though Bethany and I had many differences, personality was not one of them. When we were sad, we were deeply sad; when we were angry, we would explode with anger; and when we loved; we loved with all our heart. Though it seemed like we were opposites clashing, we were actually more similar than we could ever imagine.

Despite our differences and competitive natures, as we grew older my sister and I realized how similar we really were and used it to our advantage . . . we barely needed to speak to one another because we already knew the other’s thoughts. Because we are both verbally and emotionally expressive, we even learned to shut up at times whenever the other was “acting out.”

In time my sister and I learned to get along. We enjoyed being together - she helped me with my homework (over Discord), she would tell me about what she did at school and work, whenever she was home we would go out and eat together, we played board games together, and even shared long talks about life together (during the school year, we would chat online on Wednesday nights).

“Jeh Jeh, though you are gone, I’ll always remember your love and fear of God. You taught me to live by faith and not by sight . . . you also taught me that ‘true comfort and love can only be found in Jesus Christ.’ Jeh Jeh, I miss you and love you. Nothing can ever replace you in my heart, but I know that you are with Jesus in paradise.”

Sharing from Elise Chung at Bethany’s memorial:

“I knew Bethany to be one of the most joyful people I have ever encountered. I also knew Bethany battled with pain and carried heavy burdens in life, though I didn't know the full extent of it.

I’m not sure I will be able to remember her as one without the other - as joy without pain and vice versa.  Though it may seem contradictory, Bethany showed me that the two don't have to be separate, but can exist together.

The last time I saw Bethany, we went to an evening church service together and then out for dessert.  We ended up sitting in my car dipping McDonald's French fries in ice cream and reflecting on the summer, looking to what was ahead.  We shared some of our struggles and asked God hard questions together, but Bethany still made room for joy in our conversation by making jokes and sharing fun memories.

Looking back in light of what has happened since, I could think to myself that her joy that night must have been fake. How could someone in that much pain have the capacity to express genuine joy like that?

But if there's one thing I know, it's that Bethany was far from fake. That girl had so much joy to share with others. The joy that many of us in this room got to experience through Bethany was fully valid, just as the pain she was probably feeling underneath that joy is fully valid. The one does not minimize the other.

Struggling with mental health is serious. I hope that as we acknowledge the pain Bethany must have felt towards the end of her life, we are able to have more honest conversations in our communities about the reality of that pain.  But joy is also beautifully contagious, and I hope that we don’t forget to celebrate the way the Lord used Bethany’s life to bring joy to so many.  Bethany was beautiful in her joy and in her pain. I hope we can remember her in both.”

Sharing from Alliyah (Caliva Family) at Bethany’s memorial:

“ Our families have met and bonded through the years of attending jiu jitsu as kids. Saturday mornings at the gym was for the Calivas and the Poons since we were the only ones energetic enough to do more than hundreds of burpees for Coach Glenn (my dad). 

Our friendship has extended beyond the walls of that gym as we shared many summer picnics and Halloween trick or treats together.  Bethany dressed up as Anna when I was Elsa, she was
princess Leah when I was Darth Vader.  I received her hand me down clothes until, I grew bigger than her.  She was my “Ate”, a big sister that I always wanted but I never had.

Fast forward to this past year, despite being apart when we moved out to Edmonton, we reconnected when she came to study at UofA. I spent my first sleepover with her and she made sure it was the best because she spoiled me with my favorite snacks and we had a little spa night.  She loved our grocery trips with my mom and she taught us the life lesson, “If it is not on sale, you don’t need it.” She guided my brother, Angelo, in choosing the required classes for his first year of university.  She started calling my grandma and grandpa, “Lola and Lolo” out of love and respect when we have her over for dinners. 

Bethany blessed our family with her time, her witty conversations, her love and care.  There was never a dull moment with her.  She was special to all of us and she was part of our family. She touched our lives in ways we did not expect. We are thankful that we were able to spend time with her this past year.  We would always cherish our memories with her. Finally, To our dearest Bethany, we pray that you would find peace and comfort on your journey home to Jesus.”

Sharing from Uncle Leo (and Amy) Mak at Bethany’s memorial:

“I have known Bethany since she was about 5 years old. I still remember she was a great help to her parents. On Saturday mornings, Pastor John would come back to church for worship practice, usually Bethany accompanied him, together with her 2 younger brothers - Joshua and Josiah. Though the age difference between her brother and hers  was only a couple of years, she spoke with authority “You boys need to clean up before leaving” and they did accordingly with respect. On Sunday mornings, she followed Pastor John closely, with her hand holding PJ’s coffee mug, she then sat down with a note-book and a pencil in her hands quietly ready for the preaching.

The little ones from our congregation loved Bethany (in fact, the whole congregation loved her). Whenever a baby cried, she would come over, hug and whispered in their ears, held them in her arms professionally and the baby would stop crying. How could a little girl of 6-7 years old do this? But she did it.

In  these past years, whenever it;s Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, or Christmas, Amy and I would receive a greeting from Bethany via whatsapp, even when she was out of town. When she came back for holidays, we would meet and she would share stories about little ones and elderlies whom she met regularly in Edmonton. Bethany, you said you will buy us dinner as you got a part-time job.

Bethany your lovely smiles and laughs are so genuine, your desire for God’s Word are so true, your care and love to your family, to everyone who knows you, and to the seniors who have come across your path will always be in our thoughts and memories. Definitely we will meet again in heaven. We love you, we miss you Bethany.”

Bethany, thanks for being the love and light in every room and to everyone you’ve met. I’ll miss you, until we meet again.

I was very sorry to hear of the loss of Bethany. 
As an IB teacher at Semiahmoo Secondary School, I am fortunate to work with many extraordinary students and Bethany was one of those exceptional students.  
The thing I remember most about Bethany was how her warmth, genuine kindness and joyful laugh filled the classroom. Bethany was one of those students who I knew, her academic brilliance combined with her caring personality, would have a positive impact on the world.

Bethany was a smiling face, a compassionate sister, a loving daughter, and an overwhelmingly warm presence. She was a fierce competitor, an avid learner, and a role model in the gym. She was funny, smart, mature, selfless, powerful, joyous and just so many other things. For years, she was my one of my favorite parts of Saturday mornings, she was someone my daughters looked up to, and she will be missed - she will be missed so very much. I will remember her as an example of just how brightly someone can shine, and I’ll carry her memory with me.

Bethany had a glowing, Godly presence around her. She was optimistic, hardworking, and kind. She demonstrated what a strong daughter of God looked like. 

I remember seeing her fill the church halls with her presence, chatting away with other church members. I remember seeing her smile so brightly as she talked about her family and about God. 

I grew up alongside Bethany in the youth ministries and her example always inspired me.

I’d like to send my deepest condolences to the Poon family during what must be the most difficult moment of their lives. May God’s grace, comfort and embrace surround you during this time.

I still clearly  remember the bus trip from Brock University to Pearson Airport in 2009.  It was long but a fun ride and was one of the earliest moment I interacted with Bethany for a longer duration. We were playing on the bus, doing and saying silly things with Bethany, Joshua and myself. And then when you grew up, you were Bethany Jei Jei, you look after the kids at Sunday School. I feel you genuinely loved my kids. You always had a great smile on your face. And it was a delight seeing you when I picked up my kids after Sunday School. We were very blessed to meet you in our life. You shined and had a great positive influence.

It was very sad to see you go so soon, but I’m sure we will meet soon.

During the season of thanksgiving in 2020 online zoom for University College Fellowship, we each created thanksgiving haikus inspired by Psalm 100. I compiled everyone’s poem and received their art direction to create wallpapers.  This was Bethany’s, designed for her iPad.

Dear Bethany,

We grew up together at NRAC, from AWANA clubber and leader, to sharing and doing life together in the same fellowship. A sister with wisdom and maturity, and a loving and caring personality. You touched my heart every time we caught up. Our favourite topic was updating each other about our pets, Peanut, June, and Fuji. You are forever a blessing to our church family. I treasure the memories we share and I look forward to the day we meet again in our Father’s home.

I cannot imagine the pain and sorrow you are facing, but our God knows. His love is unfailing, and He is good. I pray that He will be your comforter, your rock, and your strength.

When I met Bethany in Edmonton at our church, I was welcomed by her warm presence, laughter, and excitement to plug into community.  She was a bright young adult with huge potential, and a heart that really wanted to serve others before her own.  It makes me wonder the level of impact she had on others who have known her longer than we have.  We miss her dearly... We really do.

My heart and prayer continues to go out for your family.  I can't even imagine the level of sorrow from Bethany's unexpected and devastating loss.  My prayer is that the Lord would show you his tender love and care, that His presence would meet you in your sorrow, and that your laments would be heard. Did you know that my name means “Gift of God”? As a Jonathan for over 25 years, it’s my expert opinion that this title would have been more fitting for you instead. Your presence will forever be a blessing to our church family. Your caring kindness has impacted more people than you know, and your infectious smile will never be forgotten. Your wisdom was beyond your years; the insight and perspective that you brought to our bible studies, surrounded by people 5, 10, even 15 or more years older than you will always be an inspiration to me.

Bethany, your family holds such a special place in my heart. I watched your brothers grow up. We shed blood, sweat, and tears together on the AWANA game floor as I captained their teams to victory. Your mom has been such an incredible source of encouragement and support for my sister throughout the years. And your dad, I could write a book about this man. He has been the best mentor to me, both for my spiritual life, and for my everyday struggles as I continue to navigate through young adulthood. 

Whenever I remember you and my heart hurts, my mind always goes to your family and how incomparably more pain they must be experiencing. But I have hope, WE have hope in Christ Jesus, in His goodness and grace. It is so difficult, maybe even impossible during this time to focus on God’s goodness. But it is precisely because we are His children that we can turn our eyes to Him and look forward. And I look forward to seeing Bethany again, in the place that Jesus has prepared for us, where there will be no more mourning or crying or pain.

Bethany, the love that you have shown us all will never be forgotten, like salt that never loses its saltiness, and like a shining light that never fades. May God be the greatest comforter, provider, and protector for your beloved family. Until we meet again, in the loving arms of our heavenly Father.

I remember when Bethany came to visit, always a ray of sunshine. Though I wasn't as close or had as many interactions -- I could tell she was a blessing to all she met. 

I don't have many words to say, but perhaps a reminder or two when things get a bit rough.

Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit. -Jeremiah 17:7-8

This was the first and only time we met Bethany 12 yrs. ago.  We still remember her as the bouncy, happy, pretty girl.  In looking more intently at this picture, I realized Bethany sat between us, and I was holding her hair and her hand.  How special it is to me now.  Sending our love and thoughts to our dear friends.

My dear Bethany,
Thank you for being such a loving and giving young person I have ever met.  Due to my history with cancer, every Sunday after worship, you would initiate to greet me and see how I was doing.  You always made me feel important and heard.  Your kindness, compassion, and altruism were beyond your age.  We miss you!!!  We are sure whoever knows you feels the same way.  May you find the ultimate peace and rest in the embrace of our Heavenly Father!

I only met Bethany once, but her radiant energy and personality had already left me with a strong impression . She seemed like a very warm hearted and caring person. Even though, we only had a few exchanges, I had already been drawn to her and wishing that I could befriend her. I bet anyone who has met her, would say the same. Therefore, I was very shocked to receive the news of her passing. And I felt very heart broken for Pastor John, Carolyn, Joshua, Josiah and Jacob.  

“‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” (Revelation21:4-5 NIV)”

Bethany is now in our Heavenly Father’s embrace. And one day we will all meet again. Until then, I pray that Bethany’s example as a daughter of God will continue to shape the lives of people around her.

Three weeks ago, after Pastor Jeffrey's service, when you stood up and turned around, I was so delighted to see you. We haven't seen each other since Covid and you have turned into such a beautiful young lady! It was so cheerful for Matt and I to talk to you. When Matt left to pack up his instruments, girl's talk started. I couldn't wait to give compliments on your appearance- a good-looking face (a good mix of both parents), beautiful long hair and blooming skin(must from your mom). You looked stunning in that cute white dress. You were a bit shy from my straightforward use of words and tried to praise my kid. I was rude to stop you by "It's ok. I just want to let you know you are so beautiful and I really mean it." Later on, we talked about your school and family. The name of your major sounded so impressive and I couldn't figure it out although you told me twice. Through you I learned that Edmonton's snow lasted from September to May. Despite the coldness, you were willing to stay there in the future as you loved Edmonton. You showed your love to your family. I was not surprised as you had a loving and close family! I still remember one of the pictures- your three brothers have grown up so much, and you said: "even my baby brother's voice is changing." Then we both laughed. Matt joined our conversation again after finishing packing. It was the longest talk we have ever had. On our way home and even at home, we couldn't stop talking about you- we were so impressed by you, a wonderful young lady! However, we didn't know you were suffering. We just couldn't believe the grievous news. We felt so sorry for you and your family. You had such good parents and siblings. You were deeply loved by your beloved family and people from church. I was told that there was a reason why God took you and he took you because he loved you. Bethany, it hurts so much that you are no longer here.We know your pain has subsided though, and this gives us some relief.

Dearest Bethany,

You kind, loving, brilliant, strong, beautiful soul. I haven't seen you in years but you have never left me, and you never will. I will forever share the stories of your being, and its undeniable passion for good. There was love in everything you did. Elementary school had some extremely low points for me, and you may not have known it, but you helped me in more ways than I can express. From your thoughtful advice, even as an 9 year old, to your bright comforting smile, you were always there as a helping hand, or just someone to listen. You are so much stronger than is even fathomable. Learning about you from the years I've missed, I've realized we had much more in common than I'd known. I have both so much more to say, while simultaniously at a complete loss for words. You were the best role model 7 year old me could've ever asked or prayed for.
I love and miss you so much. 

To John, Carolyn, Joshua, Josiah, and Jacob. I cannot fathom the emotions you are and have been experiencing.  Your family has always had a very special place in my heart, and it will now forever in a much deeper way. You have always shown me immense kindness and love, and I truly hope you feel it back. I want nothing more than to hug each of you. 

Heaven recieved an extremely special angel, and I know she is there in her most true and natural enviroment of being with and taking care of all the children, at peace. She is with you always, and will forever continue in the hearts of those she's impacted. Be those friends, family, or simply someone lucky enough to have caught her radiant smile as she walked by. Bethany's light will forever shine, and will only shine brighter with the more love and kindness we share.

Bethany Poon will be remembered by our family as the caring and compassionate sister who was always willing to step up and serve those around her.  We observed that she would take every opportunity to greet the many members of the congregation before and after church; showing a genuine interest in people’s lives especially those who she hadn’t seen recently.

Lorraine and I were blessed to have her serve at our wedding worship at North Richmond Alliance Church as a greeter.  We really appreciated her support of the young families at NRAC and how she was able to complement the ministry work of her parents, Pastor John and Carolyn.

Our hearts ache for her parents and brothers: Joshua, Josiah and Jacob, who we can only imagine how dearly they must miss their daughter and sister.  

We pray for God to continue to be with the Poon family and give them strength to meet the challenges of the current time.  May you provide them with hope, peace and love.

Dearest Bethany

On receiving the news that you were not here with us any more came with shock and unbelief and have found it difficult to put pen to paper. This may sound strange to some, but I have never met you before in person, but felt attached and connected to you because you are family and as time has gone by, have come to know you intimately and love you deeply.

Over the years, by God's Grace , by your Dad, cousin John, kindly sending me photos of you in t-shirts we sent you and your Grandma, my Aunt Lisa, keeping me abreast with all you academic and personal achievements, filled my heart with joy, happiness and tender fondness for you. We were all so proud of you, but loosing you left us all in inexpressible, immesurable pain and utterly bereft.

However, God put something to me, ........ knowing how much you loved God, has carried me through and that you are now in the eternal prescence of God comforts me and knowing that we will all be reunited, reassures me. You were  bright, intelligent and gifted. You shined the love of Christ everywhere you went and cheered and uplifted all you knew. 

Your beautiful, wide open smile and radiant face was of Heavenly Realms. I now know and will remind myself, that although am missing you so much, you dwell in the eternal prescence of God and in the loving arms of our Savior Jesus Christ. I pray the memory of your childlike excitement and joy for life,  will still live on in all our memories. Your life was lived with the fullness of your heart and your affection for family and friends was so very tangible. 

I will continue to pray for you, cousin John, Carolyn and the boys, Joshua, Josiah and Jacob and pray that God carries you all gently in the palms of His hands and guides you along the narrow path by the Light of His Word and strike against every obstacle like a double edged sword.

Dear God,
I thank you for the gift of Bethany to us, though for such a short time! But what beauty! Like a shooting star, she lit up the dark sky with brilliances. 
Lord, when my tears dry up, help me to focus not on the silence but the laughters that ring in my memory. I shall always remember her cheerful spirit, her helping hands, her kind words, her loving embrace, her generosity and her unswerving faith in God.

You were such a bright light and was such a mature, responsible young lady. In all our family gatherings you would take initiative to come over and give us a big hug and offered to take Grace to play. Dear Bethany,

I met you when you were a wee little one and followed your growth through your mom's updates.  We saw you again 10 years ago and your joy and laughter made us smile.  You possess the big sister vibe and held my little one then and from what I heard, you've constantly been the caring sister to friends and family.  I am at a loss for words when I heard the news and my heart breaks for you.   You were and still very much loved by everyone who's met you... I will always remember you as the amazing little girl who's so caring and generous with your infectious smile.  You will be missed.

You're a sweet, lovely and mature young lady. Your kindness and caring melt down everyone. This picture was taken 10 years ago, Kirstie was a silly baby. She didn't like anyone to hold her, but only you! She loves you so much. When she grew up and always said "No No" all the time, then you called her "no no mui mui".  Also, I remembered that we had fellowship lunch gathering at Church, you and your brothers were following Kristie and protecting her not to fall down in the church.  So cute!

I will never forget that we bumped into each other in the supermarket 3 weeks ago. You and Joshua ran to me and said "Hi Auntie Vivienne"....we chit-chatted in Cantonese. And we gave hug to each other. And the next day, I met you at church after worship. Thank God that when I was leaving, I turned back to say Goodbye and gave you a hug. Your smile and kindness will never be forgotten.

May God wipe away my tears...

Remembering Bethany, whose radiant smile and boundless love for our family mirrored Christ's own unconditional love. Each day without her deepens the void, but her memories continue to warm our hearts.

She had an incredible bond with our daughter. When our daughter was only 2, Bethany took it upon herself to play with her and care for her before each worship. Their interactions were a beautiful sight, an older sister gently guiding and showering affection on a younger sibling, their laughter filling the room.

Bethany was always able to encourage those around her. As we emerged from COVID lockdown and began worshipping in person again, she confided in me how touched she was to see the bond of worship between my daughter and me. It wasn't just an observation; her words were an embrace, a reaffirmation of the importance of family and faith during trying times.

As cherished as the memories are of the love she poured into our family’s lives, there's a deep yearning in our hearts, wishing we could have done even more for her in return. That we could have held her closer, and cared for her just as she did for us.

Bethany, you are deeply missed, and your legacy of love will forever remain a beacon in our lives.


Remember when physical distancing was a thing in 2020? We all had Malaysian takeout from John 3:16 restaurant in a park in Richmond.

Two weeks ago, I was so excited to see Bethany after worship as I thought she would already be in Edmonton by the time I returned from Hong Kong.  We gave each other big hugs.  After I got into my car, I had a strong feeling that I should take a photo with her.  Now I know it was a gift from God as He knew how much I would miss her.

Bethany was always caring and full of joy.  Everyone around her would feel her energy and her love.  She cared so much for her family and the people around her.  I remember she would text me and ask me to pray for her parents who have been serving faithfully at our church.  

Bethany, thank you for your love, all the kind words, prayers and the messages you sent me especially on Mother’s Day.  I am thankful that God has blessed me with your presence in my life.  Two years ago, when your grandfather passed away, you said, “I praise God that we have hope in Him and that one day we can be reunited.”  Yes indeed, we will reunite one day.  I will miss you dearly.

May God heal and comfort us, especially may His love embrace Pastor John, Carolyn, Joshua, Josiah and Jacob during this time of sorrow and sadness.

Bethany “Beefany” always took care of my brother and I, as she acted like our own sister we never had. My family and I met her at Gravity BJJ, where she always had her bubbly smile. She was always so loving and caring for our family, especially when she moved to Edmonton. I felt so excited, having the opportunity to reconnect with her, after our Jiujitsu days. One of my treasured memories I had with her, was our sleepovers. We would watch our favourite movie, White Chicks, and laugh our butts off, eat junk food, that she only bought for her and I, and most importantly, we would go on our annual Shoppers Drug Mart run. I remember the first time we went, I forgot my toothbrush and toothpaste, and she wanted to buy me the bubblegum flavour ed sparkle fun. I insisted to use the adult toothpaste, but she refused to get me anything rather than the kid toothpaste. We ended up leaving the store with the sparkle fun toothpaste with an Elsa toothbrush. I will really miss our sleepovers and shoppers runs. I love you Beefany, may you rest in the home of God. 🕊️

Bethany, with her radiant smile, loved the Lord passionately, help others, worked hard, and studied diligently. All parents regard her as a role model and an object of admiration. We at NRAC are deeply honored and joyful to have such a spiritual sister.
The news of Bethany's sudden and sad passing has profoundly affected us all. I will remember her, just as the Lord Jesus loves us. May the Lord hold Bethany in His arms and provide comfort, mercy, care, and protection to the entire Pastor Poon family during this extremely difficult time.
Let us look up to the power of God, for only God can heal wounded souls.

Dear Bethany,
You were one of the first AWANA kids that I taught and you will always have a special place in my heart. Beautiful, loving, upright and mature, you always held onto the Bible and you always held onto what was right in God’s eyes. I felt a special connection with you since we are both pastor’s kids and we are both the eldest sibling in the family. Growing up, you were always so mature and you liked to hangout with the gor gor’s and jie jie’s more than friends your own age. Your caring kindness was able to touch the hearts of many, including mine. 

When I first heard about your news, I was so shocked. But then God comforted me by giving me this image. I saw you singing and dancing around freely in heaven. Although I was in tears because I was in so much sadness and sorrow, seeing you being so joyful in heaven made me feel a little bit better. I know that this was God’s way of comforting me during a tough time. God was telling me, “Trust me, Bethany is in good hands”. 

Bethany, you are a brilliant shining star in the darkness. You truly bring light to everyone wherever you go. Although I am much older than you, there is so much for me to learn from you and that is to “love your neighbour as yourself”. I thank God for allowing me to meet you and to have had the opportunity to see you grow into a beautiful young woman. Although we are miles apart, I know that one day we will meet again in heaven.

Dearest Bethany

The first time I met you, we were in the  Golden Horse restaurant in Chinatown. You were about 5 or 6 years old,  playing with your baby brother. You were full of joy, laughter & completely carefree & innocent. You were a little girl with the purest of hearts and I thought to myself, what a delightful little girl.

As years passed by, I never had much chance to see you, but your Grandma always filled me in with all the details of you growing up. You grew to be a kind, gentle, tenderand considerate young lady. Your Grandma told me you were always so attentive to her and helped her in and out of the car with great care and patience. Now and then your mum and dad would send me photos and gave me updates on your life achievements. God gifted you with intelligence and wisdom.

It is with great sadness that you are not with us anymore, but we know that you are in the loving arms of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. I would like to think that once again, you are that carefree little girl running around playfully and full of joy. I will always cherishes this picture of you and the memories I have of you in my heart.

You were and still are so very much loved, so your departure will leave a hole that will never be filled again, but I do believe, with much certainty,that we will see you again. Wait for us at the gates of Heaven, our darling Bethany.

We were shocked and saddened with the loss of the dearest Bethany.   Her contagious smile, kind personality and sunny disposition will always be in our memory.  From her hair donation for charity, representing her university, working out her career to do brain research as well as knowing her at church, we see an ambassador of Christ in her.  The news of her departure from us has been very painful to swallow.  

May the perfect peace of God rest in the hearts of the Poon family. May the loving hands of our Lord embrace them close to His heart as the Poon family goes through this difficult period of bereavement.  May the hope of seeing her again comfort us all.  May Bethany rest in peace in God’s embrace and dwell in the House of our Lord forever.

I remember when I first met Bethany in the Poon family home in a BBQ fellowship back before COVID began. The first thing that caught my attention is how energetic and vibrant she is. She also showed wisdom beyond her age. Though I may not always get the chance to interact with her, she has left something to be remembered and cherished. My heart is heavy knowing she passed away. Yet, my heart also is comforted that she is now with the Lord and she is in a much better place. 

To PJ and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you. May the Lord grant comfort and be your rock in this time of grief.

I am very saddened to learn of Bethany's passing.  She was one of the best students in my program; full of energy and vigorously pursuing her dreams.  She had me on my toes writing reference letters for research opportunities and scholarships that she endlessly hunted down.  This is undoubtedly a time of great loss to her family at home, and also a great loss to her academic family at the University of Alberta.  I am heartbroken.

Beautiful wonderful Bethany, my heart aches for you and your family. You were so dearly loved. I remember the very last chat wine had in June at uncle Jim’s where you enthusiastically offered to take our girls sometime if uncle Keith or I ever needed a break. That was so characteristic of you. Joyful, giving, wanting to serve those around you.  Every year at our annual Christmas gatherings, which grew exponentially o er the years, you would manage to move on and make each child feel special and cared for while connecting with us aunties and uncles as well with your vibrant life giving self. We were always in awe of your positivity and joyful nature and even though I was the auntie, you were always blessing me with your love and maturity beyond your years. 

You have left a huge void in all of our hearts but you will never be forgotten. Rest well, our sweet Bethany. 

John, Carolyn, Joshua, Josiah, and Jacob, we love your family fiercely and will uphold you in our prayers and our lifelong support and friendship always. I am so sorry for your unimaginable loss. 

It still doesn't seem real that Bethany is not with us anymore... Auntie Sally misses you Bethany.
We didn't get to see Bethany very often but every time we saw her, she poured out her love on my three young children. She made a huge impact on my two girls. After we relocated to a small town in northern BC, Bethany would write letters to my girls regularly. She is my girls' only and favourite pen pal. 
We saw her last during our short visit to lower mainland last summer. It was the day after she injured her finger. Despite the pain and the uncertainty, she welcomed us and spent time with us. Bethany always put other people's needs before hers. She loved her Lord and the people around her.
Dear John, Carolyn and boys, I can't imagine how much pain you are going through now. But please know that you are deeply loved by the Lord and by each one of us. It is in moments like this that our hope in Christ is ever so true and so precious. I can't wait to see her again. Love you all.

May the Lord of comfort brings us all peace, as we remember the beautiful soul of lovely Bethany, whom I have only met once or twice this summer, but striked me as a super bubbly, smiling girl. 

I cannot imagine what it must have been like for Ms. Caroline, and for everyone of the Poon family, but I know this will only be a short and brief farewell. I am sure her soul has rested with our Lord and has ceased her toil on earth. My condolence and prayer is with you all for the Lord's grace to carry all of our church family through this very difficult period and help us grow in this experience together, closer to His heart.

Words cannot describe our pain in the heartbreaking news.  We miss you so much, Bethany.  You are the perfect child every parent would long for.   You are bright and cheerful.  You are so loving and caring to your younger siblings and everyone around you.  You did your best and achieved high in everything you touched.  You are the role model for the young and the old alike.   Your heart is always embracing and welcoming.   You shared your heart, your love, your smiles, and yourself selflessly to people around you. I feel as though I'm at a loss for words, yet overwhelmed with an abundance of thoughts and emotions.

I still remember all of our conversations so vividly. You were always so loving and caring. You shared so much joy with everyone around you, and your energy was contagious. I will never forget your kindness. 

To the family of Bethany,
I am the aunt that Hannah referred to in her condolence note. Although I did not work directly with Bethany, we had frequent encounters this summer because she worked in the same lab area as me at the University of Alberta. I can still remember her big bright smile when she walked in, her vivacious laughter when she hanged out with other students in the lunchroom, and her head poking at my office door  waving goodbye at the end of the day. She was such a sweet, sweet soul. I shed tears when I imagined her walking down the hallway, writing notes on her table, or carrying out experiments. On her last day of work before she headed back to BC, she left us some Chinese sweets and treats (as if to remember her by), and then she stopped by my lab to encourage me to continue to have an impact with my research, then she said “see you in September.” If I had only known the last time would me the last time, I would have put off all the things I had to do….I will always cherish her memories. Even though I may never know the reason till heaven, I hold on to God’s promise in Romans 8:1 that “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.” and to those you left behind I also know that “The Lord is near to the broken-hearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18). You are and will be dearly missed, Bethany.

Words cannot describe the pain that we are all going through at this moment. Bethany was a shining light and a true representation of what is right in this world-every time she entered a room, you would know she was there without even so much as a cursory glance-she had that presence. Her smile and beauty lifted everyone up that were  fortunate enough to be around her...I wasn't as close to her as others at the church, and now I truly realize that this was my loss, but my memories of her are my gain as they are for all of those fortunate enough to have known her...I don't know where we go from here, but once the shock has subsided, I pray that our memories of her as she was and will always be bring us some comfort as I know that this is what she would have wanted as she really was as selfless an individual that you would hope to meet. Prayers to the Poon family in this most difficult of times. Peace in Christ

Our heartfelt sadness for the Poon family as Bethany was a bright light that cannot be dimmed even among great sadness.  

As long as we have known her, she radiates the beauty of her Lord with a heart exploding with love and a wisdom that resonates the lessons imparted from above through her parents.  We were among many who had the first-hand experience of her wonderful joy extended to the old, to the young and to everyone who had the fortunate opportunity to meet her.  She always seems to make you feel like you were heard, you were important.

Though things have a way to go unexpectedly, but Bethany will never be forgotten.  She is missed.  Her family is loved.  And her Saviour loves her even more than we ever imagined.

Bethany, how I wish I could’ve said thank you. Thank you for keeping everyone around you joyful. Thank you for bonding over Indian food and our auntie tendencies at Shad. Our time together was very brief, but I always joked with colleagues about your energy Bethany, you were full of energy sprinting from one task to the next, and I always wondered how this wide eye little girl will do when she graduates. You were always asking me questions, wanting to know more, learn more. I chuckle when I think of you. While we are shocked to say the very least, we remember the best times with you.

Dear Pastor John and the family, 

This is Yasmin La Guardia from CEAC and JMC. I would like to extend my deepest condolences to you and your family as we grieve alongside you in this very difficult time. 

Bethany was a very beautiful soul that even though we only had a chance to meet her once at our church, she still left such a big impact to a lot of us here. I remember Bethany as a very bubbly lady who was very sociable to all of us. I knew that we were all going to be very good friends the moment we met her. I wish we had more time to get to know each other and I wish we reached out to her more while she was here in Edmonton but I have hope that we will meet her again in heaven. I’m glad that we got to know her even just for a little bit and please know that her heart will always be remembered by us. We miss her.. we love you Bethany..

Bethany .. I miss your wondrous smile, your cheerful spirit, the way you ensured that no matter how old or how small you let all who you encountered know that they are seen and loved by you.  Your light was bright, so very bright. To honour you, Biu Yee Ma will follow in your foot steps. To treat others like you did, in hopes to give them the warmth we were so lucky to have experienced with you. In heaven we will meet you again and I can’t wait for your embrace and that smile at the gates. 

When I think of Bethany, these words come into my mind: beautiful, thoughtful, intelligent, and faithful. Growing up together at church, I witnessed her growth in so many ways. Whenever we chatted, she would ask if there was anything I was going through that she could pray for. I learned so much from her selfless and caring nature. As many would agree, she exuded maturity and her love for God and others was evident in her daily actions. 

I remember serving together in preschool worship. I was impressed by her ability to interact with the kids so naturally and lead with such enthusiasm. When leading the preschoolers in worship songs, she had such a lovely voice and smile. She was talented in many areas, and music was one of them.

During a turbulent time in my university life, we were in a daily devotional WhatsApp group together. She encouraged me through her reflections and I was so grateful for her companionship.  

Bethany, I miss you very much, but I know you are in God's loving embrace where there are no more tears and no more pain. Your life has touched so many others including mine and your memories live on in our hearts. Thank you for the impact you've had on my life. Praying for God's unending peace and comfort upon your family. 

We're saddened with news of Bethany's passing. She's been a great friend and light in our lives. My husband met her in university classes and they became quick studious friends. She always saved a seat for Morgan, knowing he liked the spot with the most leg room. 

She never entered our home empty handed, and we were introduced to many Chinese treats, she wouldn't listen when we purposefully told her not to bring anything. 

Her confidence, life experience and reflex to get out of her seat and help others made it hard to believe she was 19. When we introduced her to other friends, we'd make them guess her age. They'd always guess wrong. 

Her dedication to her faith and family was the driving force in her choices. She talked often of her little brothers, church congregation and extended family. Although from different faith traditions, we bonded over love of Jesus. 

She was acutely aware of other's needs, heartaches and pains. I had confided in Bethany about a recent miscarriage and she sat with me and worked through feelings. Months later on Mother's Day she was aware of me, and sent me a lovely text. 

We miss her by are comforted that she's with a God she knew so well. We're praying for your family.  

Hello Pastor John and the rest of the family.

I don't know if you remember me, but it's Hannah back from JMC. I wanted to send our love from my family to yours. My whole family and I met Bethany back in December 2022 and I can definitely say she easily made a huge impact in all of our lives even from just one meeting. We all loved her presence and energy: bright, friendly and kind. She got along so well with all of us, even got to hold my brother's baby. I remember us pressuring her to join us for lunch in the basement and though she was shy to join she did and we had such a fun time, eating and fellowshipping, getting to know one another. Also, the world is a small place because I found out she was an intern at my aunt's work and she knew her well, would dub her as one of the most loved interns at work. 

The news truly breaks all of our hearts. I really wish I was there for her while she was here. Even though we had really only interacted once, I felt drawn to her, I cared for her and I would say I loved her from the get go. We had messaged each other when I had returned from the BC trip and even talked about hopefully seeing each other in the future, if she ever got a ride or even a car. I'm sorry, I should've been giving her a ride. My words don't mean much considering she is not here and everything I wanted to do, I can no longer. But now is not the time to be regretting what I could've done. I want to remember Bethany as the person who laughed and joked around with me, who immediately felt comfortable enough to hang onto my arm when she was feeling shy, who naturally fell into a pleasant rhythm with my family and other members of our church, who messaged me loving reminders every once in a while of blessings, to stay safe and rest from school. I pray for peace and comfort for you all. I pray wholeheartedly that she is finally in peace. I miss her.
