Robert (Bob) Martin Thompson passed away peacefully in Sun City, Arizona, on May 24 , 2020, from complications from multiple myeloma, at the age of 76. He was preceded in death by his niece, Colleen Murphy, in March of 2020.
He is survived by the love of his life, Raquel, and their cherished children Carina (Mark) Herman, Crissy (Matt) Duncan, Bob (Jaime) Thompson, Mara (Rodrigo) Brasil, Rana (John) Freeze, and Mickey Thompson. Also survived by siblings, Ned Thompson, Kathleen (Jerry ) Murphy, Tricia Flor, Max (JoAnn) Thompson, Tim (Sandy) Thompson, and Rebecca (Mike) Murdock. Bob also is survived by grandchildren Joey Thompson, Leylen and Toren Duncan, Claire Freeze, Lorenzo and Matteo Brasil and 19 nieces and nephews.
Born in Newcastle Wyoming on November 23, 1943, Bob moved to St. Paul Minnesota in 1955. He attended Lakeville High School, Lakeville, MN, and graduated in 1962. He received an appointment from the Hon. Hubert H. Humphrey to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, where he received his undergraduate degree with the class of 1966. He was commissioned in the Army Field Artillery branch, serving tours of duty in Germany and Viet Nam, attaining the rank of Captain. Upon returning from Viet Nam, Bob went back to West Point and worked in the admissions office. He married Raquel in October of 1970 then in 1972 he left the military to attend school at Harvard Business School in Cambridge, MA, where he received his MBA in 1974. He then worked as a successful commercial real estate developer in Charlotte, NC, Oklahoma City, OK, Tucson, AZ, and ended up in Denver, CO where he spent the remainder of his real estate career. His family lived there for 35 years.
Bob and Raquel moved to Sun City West, AZ in 2014. Bob enjoyed socializing with his and Raquel’s many friends and family who lived nearby. He greatly enjoyed singing bass in several barbershop quartets, with the Desert Aires Barbershop Chorus in the Sun Cities and the Phoenix Barbershop chorus. He was named Barbershopper of the Year for the year 2018.
Bob cherished his Christian faith and Catholic heritage. Bob’s love of his family, his wisdom and sharp mind, his sense of humor, along with his love of his barbershop family will be fondly remembered by everyone. His love, dedication and service to our country will be greatly missed by his large family and many friends. Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother and Friend, May you forever rest in God’s peace!
Due to the complications of having large gatherings at this time, a celebration of Bob’s life will be held at a later date.
