In loving memory of Joseph John Kozak Jr., born in Philadelphia, PA, who passed away in Phoenix, AZ on October 16, 2018 at the age of 81. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Theresa, his daughter, Joanne Amend, and sons, Joseph III and Stephen. Joe is also survived by his four grandchildren, Joseph IV, Brian, Matthew, and Nolan Kozak.
Joe grew up in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia and served in the US Navy in the late 1950’s. Stationed in Barcelona, Spain, as a radio operator, he developed an interest in electronics which would lead to a successful career in the aerospace industry.
While working during the day, Joe attended night classes at La Salle University where he earned a BS degree in Business Administration.
While spending many years of his life in Warminster, and then Furlong, PA, Joe proudly raised his loving family. His career took off as he worked for General Electric, which later became Lockheed Martin, until he retired in 1999. Joe often worked on top secret government assignments and at times he could not reveal to his family the details of his work projects. We now know that these programs formed the basic structure of today’s satellite GPS and communication systems.
Joe was a devoted father and made every effort to be involved in his children’s activities. He coached little league football, attended every father/daughter event and later loved being a grandfather.
Upon his retirement, Joe and Tess relocated to Sun City Grand in Surprise, AZ where he was a highly regarded neighbor and valued member of the community. He served as the neighborhood Block Watch Captain.
Joe enjoyed spending time outdoors playing golf and walking. He loved to follow the Arizona Cardinals football games, but always maintained a soft spot for his beloved Philadelphia Eagles.
Joe’s energy and positive outlook on life made many friends. He was active in Arizona attending, or hosting parties and other social gatherings. Also, despite being separated by distance, Joe made it a point to keep in touch with his family, neighbors and former colleagues back east. He made annual trips to the old neighborhood and organized many well attended reunion luncheons. Joe had a lively sense of humor and loved to tell jokes. He was the guy everyone wanted to “split a beer” with.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, October 22, at Saint Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, 17111 W Bell Road, Surprise, AZ, 85374. Joe’s wishes were to be cremated and there will be an inurnment ceremony scheduled for later in the week at the National Memorial Cemetery at 23029 N Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, AZ.
