59 years, and the devoted father of Valerie Miner, Todd and Troy Love. He was the loving brother of Carol Love and proud grandfather of 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Don was a 1959 graduate of Eaton High School, Eaton, Indiana. He played on the Eaton High basketball team which won the Delaware County Championship in 1959. He attended Purdue University on on a Naval ROTC Scholarship, and was commissioned as a United States Marine Corps Officer in the spring of 1963.
Don served his country as a Marine Fighter Pilot. He flew the F-8 “Crusader”, A-4C/F “Skyhawk”, and O-1G “Bird Dog” and conducted 512 combat missions over the skies of Vietnam. His actions saved the lives of countless Marines earning him the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was also awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart while serving in Vietnam. Major Love was a enthusiastic dedicated U.S. Marine as well as true Patriot. He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery with honors.
Don was an avid golfer and loved spending time on the golf course. He was a huge sports fan of all kinds. He admired the discipline and accountability sports required from a person at all levels. He retired at age 51 and was a keen investor and followed the stock market closely. He would often say, “I wake up every morning to check the market to see if I am retired or just unemployed.” Additionally, he had a passion for mentoring younger generations in the discipline of investing and personal financial management. Above all, Don was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and was always there for his family, ready and willing to lend a helping hand. All those who knew him, came to understand that right underneath his hard protective shell one would find a soft and gentle man. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Don Eugene Love was a man of great integrity and had an unwavering commitment to his family and the America that he loved. He will be remembered for his undying courage, selflessness, generosity, and most of all his kind spirit. A true friend to all who knew him. We love you, Dad and you will be forever in our hearts.
