Rosemary T. Hopwood was born in New York City on February 28, 1925, to James and Edna Young. She was raised in Ridgewood, Queens, NY, the oldest of five sisters. During the depression, she was called upon to help the family so she quit school and went to work. She had a brief brush with fame when she appeared on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts in the late 40s--finishing second. She married James B. Engbarth and they had five children. She later remarried to Robert J. Hopwood, the love of her life.
Throughout her life she lived in several states including New York, Delaware (her favorite), Nebraska, California, Colorado, and Arizona. She lived in Tustin, CA, for over 25 years, but she was a native New Yorker at heart. She travelled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and overseas visiting countries in Europe and the Middle East. Israel was her favorite and she visited several times as a tour guide. She continued to travel until her late eighties when physical and mental impairments began to take their toll.
Rosemary is proceeded in death by her parents, her husband Robert, and sisters Pat and Barbara. She leaves behind her children--Jim Engbarth (Kerry), Tom Engbarth (Debra), Jeannine Brace, Marjorie Ward (Bart), and John Engbarth (Rose); her grandchildren--Jennifer, Robert, Kayleigh, Brandon, Drew, Dilynn and Avery; one great grandchild--Brandon; and sisters--Ginny and Jackie.
Rosemary was a kind and gracious woman and family was dearest to her heart. She was also strong and independent and survived many difficulties with grace. The family would like to thank the staff at Altercare, especially Joe See, who gave her comfort in her years residing with them. Please consider a donation to Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org) to help combat this terrible disease.
A graveside service will be held for Rosemary on Friday, January 22 at 11:30 AM at the Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City, AZ.
