It is with great sadness that the family of Romeo Molo Abejuro, M.D. announces his passing from this life to the next on December 7, 2018. "Romy", as he was known by family and friends, died peacefully of heart failure after several years of illness. He was 84 years old.
Born in Manila, Philippines on March 3, 1934, Romy was one of seven children of the late Licerio Abejuro and Pilar Molo Abejuro. He is predeceased by his brothers and sisters James Abejuro, Angela Abejuro Albaytar, Lourdes Abejuro, Joseph Abejuro, and Perfecto Abejuro. He is survived by his dear little sister Alicia "Lily" Abejuro Casas.
Romy lived a full life driven by a lifelong thirst for learning and a desire to help others. These passions inspired his determination to work in the medical profession. He graduated from University of Santo Tomas, Philippines. After completing his medical residency in 1963, eventually he spent most of his career practicing psychiatry, primarily in Walter Reuther Hospital in Westland, Michigan. When Romy recognized the need to reach a large and growing Spanish speaking community, he taught himself how to speak Spanish to be able to more adequately serve them. This is one example of his work ethic, spirit of generosity, kindness and compassion. He helped and touched many people throughout his career.
While medicine was a main highlight of his life, his one and only love was the light that truly illuminated it: "Ludy" Lourdes Escarilla Abejuro, his beloved and devoted wife for 59 years. Romy fondly talked about having initially captured Ludy's attention while he was the Captain of the Basketball team in Liceo de Albay high school, then drew her in with love letters delivered by a mutual friend. Partners in life, love and dance, together they lovingly raised their children “Noy” Romeo, Jr. (of Glendale, Arizona), Gerald (of Farmington, Michigan), Ronald (of Novi, Michigan), and Susan (of Peoria, Arizona) in mostly Farmington Hills, Michigan. After retiring, they moved from Michigan leaving behind many wonderful friends, colleagues, milestones and memories. Romy and Ludy settled in Peoria, Arizona to be closer to their daughter Susan and enjoy warmer temperatures; they have lived there for the past 14 years, happily adding on to their network of friends and neighbors.
Along with his wife Ludy and children, Romy is survived by his son and daughters in law: Cynthia, Kayann and Glenn, 5 grandchildren: Brandon, Helen, Sydney, Lauren, Caedyn, and many nieces and nephews.
Romy was very much loved by his family and friends, colleagues and patients and will be greatly missed by all.
