5 July 1931, 5 May 2012. Robert Tallmadge Root of Litchfield park, AZ, was born to Winthrop and Ina Root in Williamstown, MA, where his father was a professor of German at Williams College.
Educated at Harvard College, Bob also received an MA degree from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Maryland, all in Psychology. His professional career included positions with the Human Resources Research office in Washington, DC, Dunlap & Associates in Washington, DC, HRB-Singer in State College, PA, and with the US Army Behavioral and Social Science Research Institute, also in Washington, DC. After retiring to Sun City, AZ, Dr. Root became involved with the Sun Health Corporation, serving on many committees and boards including those for W.O. Boswell Memorial Hospital, the Research Institute, the Planning Committee, the Institutional Review Board, and MediSun. His positions with Sun Health included being chairman or president of the Sun Health Corporate Board, the W.O. Boswell Memorial Hospital Operating Board, and the Research Institute. Bob also served on the boards of One Step Beyond, the Sun City Community Fund Foundation, Valley of the Sun United Way, Sun City Foundation, Sun City Ambassadors, and the Arizona Town Hall. With a lifelong interest in theater, Bob has served on the Board and as President of Theater Works. He is survived by his wife, the former Nancy Brandes, daughter Kathryn Neal, and granddaughter Elizabeth Neal. In 2000, Bob and Nancy received the WESTMARC Best of the West Leadership Award. An acclamation for a life well lived will be held at Theater Works on June 15th, at 4:30 PM in the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts, with a supper reception to follow.
