After high school, Bob honorably served his country during WWII in the United States Army. After the war, Bob started college at UCLA where he majored in Education and Physical Education. At UCLA, he met the love of his life, Alice Joan Swindler. They married in 1949.
After college, Bob’s father-in-law encouraged him to enlist in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. Shortly after enlisting, the Korean War began. Bob was called up to Pairs Island, SC where he went through the Marine’s boot camp, after which, he was commissioned as an officer. After basic, Bob went to Officer’s Training School in Quantico, VA. Following that, Bob returned to Paris Island, SC and coached the USMC Basketball Team. After 16 years, Bob retired from the USMC Reserve as a Major.
After five years of active duty with the Marines, Bob and Joan began their lives. He was a teacher, an assistant Principal and a Principal in Alexandria, VA schools for the next 25 years. During this same time he earned his Master’s Degree in Education at George Mason University and was the co-founder of the Northern Virginia Athletic Directors and Coaches Association.
After retiring, Bob and Joan moved to Sun City West, AZ. Here they enjoyed golf and their friends. Bob was also a Marshall for all seven golf courses in the Sun Cities.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Alice Joan Frear; children, Patricia (Darryl Miller) Miller, Douglas (Nancy) Frear, Kevin (Deborah) Frear, Brian Frear and Anne (Vincent) Griffin; brother, Pete Chambers; ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
