Myrlene Ann Shoup-Hugo (92) passed away on January 13, 2022 surrounded by her devoted sons. She was born in Ponca City, Oklahoma on July 16, 1929 where she spent the first 15 years of her life. Her childhood was a happy one with frequent weekend visits to her paternal grandparents' farm near Depew, Oklahoma and her maternal grandparents' home in Wichita, Kansas. Between weekends there was school, church, and endless hours playing with her younger sister, Lorie, little brother, George, and neighborhood friends. After moving to Springfield, Ohio, she attended Springfield High School where she met her future husband and the father of her children. After two years of college at Ohio University and Whittenberg University, Myrlene and Ronald Mezger were married. There was a move to Columbus for Ron's Medical Schooling and a stint in the Air Force during which time all four sons were born. Her first son died of a blood disease a few weeks after birth. Myrlene worked at several different jobs, but primarily as an elementary school secretary for two Worthington, Ohio schools. In 1975, a dozen years after a difficult divorce and with one son in the military, she moved with her two youngest sons to Phoenix, Arizona to be near her aging parents. Arizona would be home for the remainder of her life which included marriages to beloved husbands she outlived due to their unfortunate illnesses. Until she retired in 1992, Myrlene continued to work in education at the Creighton School District and the Arizona Department of Education. In 2005 she purchased the El Dorado of Sun City condominium that her parents left upon their deaths. There she happily lived out her days in well-deserved comfort while staying active in church, travel, reading, volunteering, condo life, and hosting visitors. A committed Christian since age nine, she passed her faith on to her family who look forward to seeing her again one day. All who knew her would say she was beautiful, kind, thoughtful, fun, classy, faithful, positive, devoted, generous, capable, strong, humble, compassionate, joyful, had a great sense of humor, and saw the best in all people.
Myrlene is predeceased by her beloved parents Herbert and Earline Hagle, her first son Mark Steven (1953), and husbands Richard Shoup (1999) and Kenneth Hugo (2012). She is survived by sister, Lorie Park, and brother, George (Catherine) Hagle II; three sons, Kent (Jennifer) Mezger, Scott (Jill) Mezger, and Keith (Betsy) Mezger; eight grandchildren Kevin (Lacy) Mezger, Kari (Tyler) Mitchell, Jessica (Joel) Tracy, Eric Mezger, Stephanie (Michael) Waite, Melissa Mezger, Mark (Stacy) Mezger, Stacey (Mark Levine) Mezger; 17 great-grandchildren Lanie Dougherty, Addison & Ella Mezger, Easton, Laken, Copeland, and Wrenley Mitchell, Callyn Tracy, Caleb, Alexis & Broddrick Mezger, Tabitha & Malcolm Waite, Samuel & Leo Mezger, Matthew & Benjamin Levine; great-great-grandchild Zaiden Mezger; and many nieces & nephews.
