Lee is preceded in death by his Mother Cella Flowers and Father Lee A. Owens. He leaves his younger brother Lee A. Owens, children Kimberly Owens, Tamekia Owens, Kydim Winston, and Ex- Wife Peggy Pitts also Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren along with a host of loved ones and friends. The son of an au pair/caregiver and sharecropper in rural Mississippi marks the beginning of what became a lustrous career and life journey for Lee M. Owens. As a mischievous and curious young man, he learned that he needed to stay busy early. His mother always told him “You can do anything you want to do”. Having a strong work ethic and tenacious spirit along with God given speed and talent he channeled that energy into sports where he thrived and had many achievements. This ability carried him into college and then the military where he spent over twenty years serving his country. He would correct me here and say 21 years 5 months and 12 days. While in the military he played football for the Air Force as an unstoppable running back and receiver winning several titles and championships. However, that was not his greatest achievement he then set his sights on becoming a pilot. He found his love for flying at a young age watching crop dusters in Mississippi. When the opportunity arose, he jumped at the chance to learn and conquer flying becoming a well-respected pilot across the globe. Earning the title of Second-Generation Tuskegee Airmen. My father had a dream of flying around the world however I felt he was never satisfied as the dream never became a reality. However, one day sitting with one of his favorite students I reminded him that he did in fact achieve his dream. Puzzled he said how so? I replied you have taught hundreds of students, right? He said yes, I said well they are all pilots now, correct? Again, he said yes. I said Daddy you have circled the globe probably more than anyone in the world. He sat back in his chair puzzled that he had never considered that notion. He had a look of pride as he pondered that thought. Even still that was still not his greatest accomplishment that would be his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. During one of our last conversations, he said “how proud he was of his children and grandchildren”, that achievement outweighs anything he could have ever accomplished. Daddy you will be truly missed dearly. Love your children.
