Born on April 19, 1929, in St. Louis, Missouri. John was the beloved middle child of three, growing up with his older sister Patricia and younger sister Betty. As a boy, he had a love for roller skating, earning the nickname “The Purple Flash” for his incredible speed. He carried that same energy and spirit throughout his life.
John dedicated many years of service to The State Compensation Fund, where he forged lifelong friendships—including with his best friend of over 50 years, Jack Peavy.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 70 years, Maryellen, his son Jack, and his two sisters. He is survived by his children Ann Naughton (Patrick), Eileen Anderson (Spencer), Jim Daly (Gail), Jane Watkins (Dane), and Grace Kerby (Matthew); 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
John was a charitable and faithful man who gave generously of his time, energy, and gifts. He volunteered with organizations like Salvation Army, Grace Bible Church's Grief Share, Boswell Hospital, and the Sheriff’s Posse of Sun City. He brought joy and warmth everywhere he went, always ready with a joke or a story—especially the tale of his first date with our mom, which remained one of his favorites to tell.
For nearly 40 years, John was a devoted member of Grace Bible Church in Sun City, where his faith, fellowship, and service touched many lives. He was always ready to share his faith and tell how blessed he was.
There will be a viewing at Sunland Memorial from 9-11 am on Wednesday, April 9th. Graveside services will immediately follow. We will then have a celebration of life at Grace Bible Church at 1pm. A reception will follow in Fireside Hall. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of the Valley in his honor.
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” —John 3:16
