Jennie (Giovanna Maria Baptiste Francamore Tumminia) Fischer, 101, was born in St. Louis, Missouri on September 26, 1918. Her birthname was Giovanna but she changed it to Jennie because Americans couldn’t pronounce it. Jennie grew up in a section of St. Louis that was predominantly Italian immigrant families. Her brother’s best friend, Yogi Berra, used to come over when Jennie’s mother made her wonderful spaghetti sauce. One of Jennie’s fondest memories was of getting out of grammar school to watch Charles Lindbergh fly over St. Louis on his way to his transatlantic journey to Europe. Jennie married a military man and had three children, Charles Kizer, Josephine “Joey” Wilson, and Mary Stanley. The family was transferred to Naples, Italy, where Jennie volunteered as a translator between American families and the Italians. Jennie eventually married her second husband, Albin, and settled in Sun City West where she took painting, organ, and golf lessons. She and her husband bought an RV and spent the summers trout fishing, marveling at the Tetons, and meeting fellow travelers. After Al’s death, Jennie sold her home and moved to Mesa to be closer to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Jennie spent the last few years of her full, rich life at the Brookdale facility in north Mesa where she made many lasting friendships with residents and employees alike.
Jennie’s family would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to the compassionate folks at Hospice of the Valley, especially Lizbeth, Carmen, and Christy. The family would also like to thank the many employees, residents, and Dr. Delia Story at Brookdale North Mesa who continued to express their affection and support for Jennie until her peaceful passing. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Hospice of the Valley. Funeral arrangements will be private.
