Gail Dixon Owens passed away on November 8th, 2015 at the age of 90 years in Surprise, AZ. He served on the Peoria Police Department for 24 years. He was promoted to Captain in 1968. He received the Valor Award after offering himself as a hostage for children held as prisoners in the St. Cecilia’s Grade School in May of 1973.
He served under George Shaded at the Sheriff’s Department for 9 years. Gail also served in the US Navy during WWII from February 13, 1943 thru April 29, 1946.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty Lou Owens, who resides in Surprise, AZ; a half-brother Bill Owens of Indianapolis, IN; a nephew Gail Blain of Naples, FL, whom Gail and Betty Lou raised from the age of 13, and his daughter Angela (Blain) Wilson of Rome, IL; a niece Karen England of Peoria, IL; and a cousin Reed Storm of Ashkum, IL. Preceding Gail in death were his parents Clyne L. Owens and Lenora M. Owens.
After cremation his urn will be returned to Plato, IL where Gail grew up and buried in the Wilson Cemetery. Truly, he will be missed by family and friends.
