Born Eugene Edward Tynan on November 1, 1933, in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York to Edward and Myrtle Tynan. Eugene grew up with his family in Yonkers, New York, the scene of many repeated stories of adventures with his brothers James and Ed and his sisters Beverly and Grace along with a colorful and loving extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins who were dear to him throughout his life.
Eugene (or Gene as he was known to his friends and family) attended Saunders Trade School where he learned drafting and other trades that served him well across the full span of his career. At 18 years old, he enlisted in the Navy and served as a Communications Officer during the Korean War. Upon returning home after the war, he worked for the NY Telephone Company and then went on to work at IBM Research in Yorktown Heights where he co-authored several patents and received an Outstanding Invention Award.
During a blind date on Saturday, February 14, 1961, over a homemade dinner of manicotti and meatballs, he met and fell in love with the love of his life, Concetta Marie Marchese. After asking permission from her father, Samuel Marchese and his wife Josephine, for her hand in marriage, they were wed eight months later on October 15, 1961 in Saint Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Poughkeepsie, New York. During their marriage of 46 years they raised three children, John, Kevin and Kathy in a loving and nurturing home.
Gene Tynan was the most thoughtful, gentle and kind man you could ever know. He was sharp, intelligent and playfully funny. He was loving and supportive of his grandchildren (Moriah and Brody Hernandez, Tom, Jacob, Kyle and Samantha Tynan, and Miles and Sterling Tynan) and always praised them and marveled at all they were doing. He was a wise counsel to many and a natural storyteller. He was a genealogist who tirelessly researched the Tynan roots back to 1817 in Rathdowney in the county of Laois, Ireland (a story which he recounted often and in great detail). He was a devoted and loving husband who supported his wife in all of her personal dreams and professional ventures and he rests in peace with her now in heaven.
There are many layers and facets to his story, and many people whose lives he touched.
He will be missed sorely and well-remembered by all.
A celebration of life will be planned for a later date.
FAMILY
Gene is survived by his three children: John Kevin and Kathy and his eight grandchildren.
