Gordon Parnell, born in Dayton, Ohio 79 years ago, has died at Hospice of Arizona after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Carole (nee Merydith), his sister Shirlee Sussman and his daughter Debi Campbell as well as step-grandson Dean Campbell, Jr., and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Eleanor, his brothers Jim and Ron (Bud), his brother-in-law Wilbur Sussman, his son-in-law Dean Campbell and his daughter, Julie.
As a young man, Gordon's models were his grandfather, Frank Whyte, and his mentors at the YMCA. He graduated from Kiser H.S., then started college at Wittenburg. Service in the army during the Korean War enabled him to finish college and start on his many careers which included Y work and equipment sales. Gordon and his first wife, Shirley (nee Hullinger), had two children, Debi and Julie. The family home was in Walton Hills, Ohio, where Gordon taught social studies at Bedford High School for twenty-five years. He coached swimming and diving in the community as well as at the school. He established the first girls' swim team at B.H.S. with such success that the 1978 team, which included daughter Debi, became that year's Ohio State champs!
is students dedicated their 1970 yearbook to "Mr. Gordon Parnell...An easy person to find when needed. Always where the kids were. Family Living, Guidance or Walton Hills Lake. Cheering for many---worrying over one. Hoping with us and believing in us."
In 1976, the Walton Hills swim team showed its appreciation by planting a tree with the plaque: "Let the leaves of this living tree represent the numerous children to whom you have taught water safety."
Upon his retirement he was honored by the Ohio Legislature for his "tireless...efforts to ensure (his) students receive the best possible education."
In his retirement, Gordon took many part-time jobs that enabled him to enjoy working with and serving others. He was married to his second wife, Carole for almost thirty years during which they traveled the U.S. in their RV, took many cruises and enjoyed their pet dogs.
Everyone who knew Gordon appreciated his efforts to put them at ease and make them laugh. This trait was evident to the end as he joked with the doctors and nurses who gave him care. Gordon touched many lives and his family has created this place to share heartfelt memories. Your participation will mean so much to us.
In gratitude to the staffs at Banner Del Webb Hospital and Hospice of Arizona, donations can be made in his name.
Thank you.
