He was a native of Columbia, Missouri and had been a resident of the Sulphur-Lake Charles area for the last 60 years. He was a member of Maplewood First Baptist Church and the ROMEO Club. Richard was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of the OCAW Union and retired from Cit-Con as a Operations Shift Foreman.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Vivian Whitman of Sulphur; two sons, Carl Richard Whitman of Norman, Oklahoma and Charles David Whitman and wife, Angela of Sulphur; six grandchildren, Eric Whitman, Dustin Whitman, Casey Whitman, Dava Whitman, Kaitlyn DeBarge, and Ethan DeBarge. He is preceded in death by his parents, William Cina Whitman and Mary "Molly" Whitman; his son, William Albert "Bill" Whitman; and his siblings, Elta Phenice, Anna Mae Dudoit, and Janie Anderson.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 29, in Maplewood First Baptist Church. Dr. Ronnie Burke and Rev. Charley Watson will officiate. Burial will be in China Cemetery in Elton under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation is from 3-8 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home.
