Nelson retired from Bell South/AT&T as a Supervisor after 40 plus years of service. He was a member of the Maplewood Lions Club and the Telephone Pioneer Club. Nelson was a workaholic who continued working for others even after retirement. He enjoyed spoiling all of his grandchildren, but he really had time in later years to enjoy the great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Joyce Richard; two daughters, Kathy Portie and husband Ronnie of Katy, Texas, Mona Chasson of Sulphur; son, Guy Richard of Florida; siblings, Ruth Racca and husband John of Lake Charles, Alfred Richard and wife Eva Rae of Starks, Jean Ryder of Lake Charles, and Sheryl Richard of Lake Charles; six grandchildren; Ashley Chasson, Corey Chasson, Brandi Chasson, Alecia Ellis, Megan Richard and Emma Richard; and six great-grandchildren, Nevaeh Chasson, Bella Picard, Preston Picard, Shae Chasson, Ethan Ellis, and Brett Ellis.
He was preceded in death by parents Dudley and Elise Richard; and brother-in-law, Kermit Ryder; niece, Carolyn Howard.
His funeral service will be a 2 p.m. October 2, in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. The Deacon Bud Wagner will officiate. Burial will follow in Mimosa Pines Cemetery South of Carlyss. Visitation will be held 2-9pm Wednesday with a Scripture Service at 6 p.m. followed by a Rosary at 7 p.m. The visitation will resume Thursday at 10 a.m. until time of service.
