Larry was born October 12, 1943, in Abilene, Texas, to L.E. and Billie Thurman. He grew up in Lufkin, Texas. After graduating from Lufkin High School in 1962, he attended Stephen F. Austin University. He worked at Southland Paper Mill in Lufkin, later moving to Boise Cascade paper mill in DeRidder. He was employed for 34 years in the Shipping Department as an operator, then as a Supervisor before being promoted to Shift Operations Superintendent. He retired in December 2003. He was very active in Dixie Youth Baseball where he coached for nine years. He was a member of DeRidder Civitan Club and an avid bass fisherman who enjoyed camping, RV-ing and cooking/grilling for his family, friends and loved ones. Larry attended Houston River Baptist Church. He was a devoted brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jan Thurman; children, Shannon Ellis and husband Roger of Moss Bluff, Jason Thurman and wife Roxanne of Austin, Texas, and Wade Thurman and wife Cathy of Frisco, Texas; brothers Kenny Thurman and wife Carol of Lufkin, Texas and Ronnie Thurman and wife Sissy, of Crosby, Texas; sister Sherry Hearne and husband Danny of Lufkin, Texas; eight grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial. Burial will be in Westlake Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
