She was born Jo Ann Tyler in Birmingham, AL, July 30, 1931 to her parents, Clarence E. (Connie) Tyler and Esther Franks Tyler. She graduated from High School in Picayune, MS and attended LSU, Northeastern Louisiana University, and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. She worked at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital for many years in the Radiology Department and was a distributor for Shaklee Nutritional Products and was the owner of The Nutrition Center of Sulphur. JoAnn was a devoted member and Pastor’s Wife at Maplewood First Baptist Church for over 40 years. Her greatest passion was teaching Sunday School to the church’s youth and young adults, positively impacting and serving as a mentor to hundreds of young lives through the years. She also sang in the choir for decades. Jo Ann loved her children, her family and friends, and her Lord. In her free time, she enjoyed traveling with friends, Bible study, playing with her grandchildren, reading, gardening and eating out. She was kind, generous and interested in others. She was dearly loved by many and will never be forgotten.
She is survived by her children, Kim Young Buoni of Sulphur, and George Tyler Young and wife, Mary Thibodeaux Young of New Iberia; three grandchildren, Jack, George, and Mia Buoni; a brother, Jerry Tyler of Nacogdoches, TX, a sister, Helen Tyler Craft of Baton Rouge, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also blessed with a circle of remarkable friends who surrounded her and her family with love right up until her last days.
A Celebration of Life Service for JoAnn will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 2, Maplewood First Baptist Church. Dr. Ronnie Burke and Rev. Charley Watson will officiate. The family will receive friends from 4 - 8 p.m. Sunday, December 1, in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until the time of service Monday in the church.
