Dr. Fontenot was a native of Church Point and had been a resident of Sulphur since 1948. He was a Korean War veteran serving in the U.S. Navy from 1953-1957. He was a graduate of McNeese State University, USL and received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from St. Louis University School of Dentistry in 1966. While in dental school, he was inducted into the Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Honor Society and Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society. He practiced general dentistry in Sulphur from 1966 to 2010. He was a member of the American Dental Association, Louisiana Dental Association and the Dental Society of Calcasieu Parish. Dr. Fontenot was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and was a faithful retreatant and retreat captain at Our Lady of the Oaks in Grand Coteau. Above all else, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Dr. Barbara Daigle Fontenot of Sulphur; his five children, Bert Paul Fontenot and wife Cecile Cutrer Fontenot of Lake Charles, Russell James Fontenot of DeRidder, Christopher S. Fontenot and wife Polly of Sulphur, Mark Elliott Fontenot of Dallas, Texas, and Teresa Monique Marcantel and husband Daniel; his siblings, Winola Mae Chaisson of Sulphur, Martha Lee Caldwell of Sulphur, Rose Marie Whitton of Friendswood, Texas, and Cynthia Gail Miciotto of Houston, Texas; and 12 grandchildren, Cecilia Claire Fontenot, Christian Hogarty Fontenot, Daniel James Fontenot, Julia Ann Pousson, Evan Johnny Pousson, Nora Evie Fontenot, Lois Elaine Fontenot, Haston Reuben Fontenot, Asher Grady Fontenot, Kadyn Daniel Marcantel, Keegan Samuel Marcantel, and Christopher James Fontenot.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Aline Fontenot; and a brother, Darrel Paul Fontenot.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 8, in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Rev. Aubrey Guilbeau will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery South in Carlyss under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation is from 4-9 p.m. Thursday with a Scripture service at 6 p.m., followed by a rosary service, and will resume from 8:30 a.m. Friday in the funeral home.
