He was born in Vinton, Louisiana on July 25, 1943 to Juanita Gaudet and Jack Powell. Deryl enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1961 as a combat medic. He then attended the University of Houston and graduated with a degree in Chemistry. He attended St. Jude Shrine Catholic Church. Deryl loved everything Hawaii and travelled to Kauai many times over the past 10 years. He also enjoyed collecting coins, rooting for the Astros, and spending time with family.
Survivors include his sister, Belinda Alexander; his children Andy (Lourdes) Powell, Lisa (Cassie) Powell, and Kathy (Kenny) Root; his twelve grandchildren, Amber (Andrew), Austin, Chris, Luis, Marisa, Kenny, Brandon, Reagan, Carter, Jalen, Claire, and Morgan; great-grandson, Walt; and many other friends and relatives. He is preceded in death by his wife, Lynn Elise Powell; his parents; his brother, Ronald; and his daughter-in-law, Linda Reid Powell.
A Celebration of Deryl's Life will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, January 15, in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home led by Hixson's Celebrant, Jody Barrilleaux. Burial will be in Big Woods Cemetery in Edgerly. Visitation is from 9 a.m. until the time of service Monday in the funeral home.
