Daniel Michael “Mike” Danahay, Jr., 98, passed away February 21, 2025, while in the presence of his loving children. Mike will be forever missed as a man of strong Christian faith, integrity, and a devoted husband and father.
Mike was born in Eureka, Illinois, to Daniel Michael and Reta C. Danahay. He was a resident of Sulphur since 1946. He was an Army Veteran of World War II, where he served with the Military Police in Europe and honorably discharged. He attended Georgia Military College, McNeese Junior College, and Sowela Technical Community College. He worked in the electrical field for over 40 years and retired in 1988. He was a member of the IBEW Local Union 861 and was a past chairman of the Lake Charles Electrical Joint Apprenticeship Committee. He was a member of the American Legion-Post 179 (Sulphur) and a charter member of The National WWII Museum. He was a certified member of The Sons of the Republic of Texas.
He was a charter member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Sulphur where he served as a Eucharistic Minister, an usher, a past president and member of the Parish Council, member of the building committee of the church complex, and trustee of the parish. He was appointed a past member of the Bishop’s Diocesan Development Committee for the Diocese of Lafayette. He received a devoted service medal of the Diocese of Lake Charles, was an Elderberry and earned the Maple Leaf Award, and in 2016 he was awarded for his faithful services to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Sulphur, Louisiana. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council’s 5755 and 8322, and a charter member of the Fourth Degree Father Veillard Assembly 2087.
Mike is survived by his two sons, Michael Edward Danahay and wife Daphne; and Daniel Patrick Danahay; four daughters, Catherine “Cathy” Rosteet and husband Sidney; Margaret “Peggy” Ducote and husband Rodney, all of Sulphur, Louisiana; Ann Galbraith and husband David of Houston, Texas; Kelly Taylor and husband Bryan of Lake Charles, Louisiana; and twelve grandchildren, Dana Cheramie and her husband Jason; Daniel Taylor and wife Jana; Bryant Ducote and wife Danielle; Madeline Danahay, Michael Danahay, and Matthew Danahay, all of Sulphur, Louisiana; Kimberly Lavern and husband David of Houston, Texas; Drew Galbraith and wife Kylie of Houston, Texas; Claire Galbraith of Kenmore, Washington; Kelly Dees and husband Ross of Lafayette, Louisiana; Kate Robinson and husband Craig of Kenner, Louisiana; and Mary Lafargue and husband Casey of Westlake, Louisiana; five step grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife of sixty years, Helen C. Danahay; his parents Daniel and Reta Danahay; and sisters Jane Kramer and Pat Bienvenu.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 2700 Maplewood Drive in Sulphur, with Reverend Timothy Goodly officiating. The burial will be in Mimosa Pines South Cemetery in Carlyss, under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be at Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home on Monday, February 24, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with a rosary at 6:00 p.m. Visitation will also be on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
