The youngest of seven children, she was born on December 26, 1918. She was three months short of turning 99 years old. Bess was a native of Indian Bayou. In 1936, she married Harvey Morgan and after living in Port Arthur for several years, they moved to Sulphur in 1943. The home they built is where they raised their family and she lived the remainder of her life. Bess was a member of Henning Memorial United Methodist Church since 1946. She worked in the cafeteria at Maplewood Middle School for many years. Upon retiring from the school system, Bess became the cook at Faith Temple Daycare where the children affectionately called her "Maw Maw Bess". In addition to being a wonderful cook, she loved working in her yard, tending to her chickens and pet peacocks, and watching the birds from her swing.
She is survived by her three sons, Harvey Morgan of Slidell, Johnny Morgan and wife, Pauline of Sulphur, and Brian "Eddie" Morgan, also of Sulphur; her son-in-law, Jack Veal of Sulphur; five grandchildren, Scotty Veal, Brian Veal, and Kempa McFarlain and husband, Brad, all of Sulphur, Bruce Morgan of Ruston, and Heath Morgan of Watson; seven great-grandchildren, Kathleen McFarlain, Michael McFarlain, Christine Laughlin, Ethan Morgan, Tyler Morgan, Elliott Morgan, and Adam Morgan; and one great-great-grandson, Isaac McFarlain. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Morgan; her beloved daughter, Faye Morgan Veal; her parents; and all of her siblings.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 30 in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. The Revs. Austin Rinehart and Ellen Alston will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery South in Carlyss. Visitation is from 8 a.m. until the time of service Saturday in the funeral home.
