On September 25, 2024 Vivian Camacho Winslow ran into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. A beloved wife, sister, aunt, and friend, she lived a life that served others and glorified the Lord.
Born on June 2, 1966 in Brooklyn, New York to Clemencia Rodriguez and Jose Camacho, she was the baby of the four siblings. Vivian was an avid reader as a young child and a good student with an enormous vocabulary, beyond her years. When the family moved from Atlanta to Houston, she continued high school. In high school, her music skills and passion bloomed. She played saxophone and piano, along with performing in the school’s ensemble.
After graduating from Sharpstown High School, Vivian then attended and graduated from Houston Baptist University in 1991 with a double major in Mass Media and Music. While working, she continued her education at night, completing her degree in 1999 at the University of Houston Law Center.
Her professional career reflected her love of education, service, writing, and learning. Vivian served Houston Christian University (formerly Houston Baptist University) in a variety of roles, including Director of Marketing & Communications and Director of Alumni & Advancement. She worked as an attorney at Bain & Barkley and finished her professional life at Star of Hope Mission as Vice President of Marketing & Communication. Vivian’s passion at HCU and Star of Hope was sharing their story to build relationships and engage others to support the Christian mission of the organization.
Vivian was an academic, athlete, musician and active volunteer. In college she was part of the prestigious Student Foundation and Omicron Delta Kappa. She worked on The Collegian, the school’s newspaper and was a member of the pep band. She remained engaged as an alumna, serving on the Alumni Board and Co-Founding the longstanding Husky Hustle 5K to raise money for scholarships. In 2003, Vivian received the Meritorious Service Alumna Award for her active engagement with the Alumni Association.
Playing tennis and running were two of Vivian’s passions outside of work. She joined Fort Bend Fit which lead to her love of running marathons including the USMC Marathon. After joining Sugar Creek Country Club, she found her new passion of playing tennis. Vivian played every opportunity she could and encouraged others to do the same. Both groups were a second family to her.
Vivian leaves behind a loving family and friends who were like family: her husband and love of her life, Kevin Winslow of Sugar Land; brother, Jose Camacho and his wife, Kay of Atlanta; and sisters Yvonne Camacho, husband Eric Blachman of Sugar Land; Joana Camacho and husband Bruce Matthynssens of Oklahoma City. She was the greatest “Tia Viv” to Joseph Camacho, Bianca Pesoli, Benjamin Davis, Luisa Matthynssens, and Michael Matthynssens. And the next generation of her great nieces and nephews, Jacob, Angelina, Genevieve, Emilia, Leonardo and Athena, Landon, Cannyn and Jackson.
A celebration of life will be held on October 4, 2024 at Sugar Creek Baptist Church 13223 Southwest Fwy Sugar Land, Texas 77478 at 11:00am. In honor of breast cancer awareness month, a cause near and dear to Vivian as a breast cancer survivor, wearing pink or a splash of pink is encouraged. In lieu of flowers, donations will make an eternal impact to Star of Hope Mission or Sugar Creek Baptist Church. A livestream will be available at www.sugarcreek.net/live.
