Born in Houston on June 12, 1957 to parents Thomas Kerr Stewart and Patricia Virginia Stewart, Andy found a love of sports early in life, playing football for his two high school teams - Stratford in Houston and O. Perry Walker in New Orleans. He also ran cross-country and was a walk-on for football at LSU. But Andy excelled at track and made that his focus for a career.
He was a pillar in the running community as a proud coach, successful running store owner and esteemed race director.
Andy loved everything about running, opening Finish Line Sports in 1985 and then holding several races a year, including the 30K, Sugar Land Turkey Trot, St. Paddy’s Half Marathon and Try Andy’s Tri. He was extremely generous to the charities he supported with each race, and always did more than just donate money by giving his time and sharing his heart.
He was a sponsor of Fort Bend Fit since its inception and loved speaking with group members about anything related to running and races.
But Andy’s biggest smiles came when he worked with kids of all ages at his youth camps. He considered it a true calling. He loved attending their track meets and cheering them on as loudly as possible.
A proud graduate of Louisiana State University, Andy enjoyed donning the purple and gold to yell “Geaux Tigers,” especially when LSU played Texas A&M, where his daughter, Caitlin, is a senior.
Andy leaves behind his wife, Jean Leach-Stewart; daughter, Caitlin Leach; brother, Steve Stewart; sister, Lyn Stewart; his aunt, Kayren Hudiburg and her husband, Lester Zeidman, of San Francisco; as well as numerous cousins and friends who are too many to count.
Andy was a devoted and loving husband who cherished his wife and daughter. He was the best big brother a person could have, always making sure his siblings knew family was first, as well as the most loyal friend a person could have.
A celebration of life for Andy will be held Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021, at 2 p.m. at The Bridge, 802 Brooks Street, Sugar Land, TX 77478.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Andy’s name to the charities he supported every year. They include Bel Inizio, M.D. Anderson Pediatric Brain Tumor Research Fund, Snowdrop Foundation, East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry, Cherish Our Children and the Jayna Murray Foundation.
