Susan Mary Choate (née D’Agostino) passed away at her home on October 13 in Sugar Land, Texas at the age of 62. Susan was born on August 3, 1956 in New Haven, Connecticut to Frank and Anna D’Agostino. She is preceded in death by her parents and her aunt, Maria D’Amicis. Susan is survived by her husband, Mark Choate, sons Matthew and Steven Choate, and sisters Fran Finn, Michelle Thatcher and Lynn D’Agostino. She leaves behind many loving friends, extended family, and a cast of Disney characters who will miss her dearly. Susan graduated from Central Connecticut State University in 1978 with a degree in Elementary Education and went on to earn a master’s degree as a reading specialist. She married Mark Choate, her high school sweetheart in 1989. Susan and Mark came to the Houston area in 1988 where Susan began a 30-year teaching career as an elementary educator. She spent many years teaching English as a Second Language. Susan carried her passion for teaching children into her faith community. For more than 15 years, she directed the Children’s Liturgy of the Word program at St. Laurence Church.
Susan was a dedicated volunteer in many capacities. She was an avid “Band Mom” for the Clements High School and Stephen F. Austin University band programs. Since 2013, along with her dear friend Julie Mueller, Susan volunteered to serve the elderly at the Mamie George Community Center. With her caring and compassionate nature, Susan was always ready to roll up her sleeves to lend hands-on support to numerous community efforts, be it to help migrant families assimilate into the area, or to feed and clothe victims of Hurricane Harvey. A visitation is scheduled for Thursday, October 18, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at The Settegast-Kopf Co. @ Sugar Creek, with a celebration of life mass at St. Laurence Catholic Church on Friday at 10:00 a.m. Fr. Drew Wood will officiate the ceremony. A reception will immediately follow at the Parish Hall.
