Robert Lee Wright

ROBERT LEE WRIGHT, 88, passed away on August 18, 2013 at his home in Sugar Land, Texas. Born on December 23, 1924 in Fulton, Missouri to Leonard and Elizabeth Wright, he rode to Texas on a pillow at age six months and spent his childhood years roaming the hills and swimming in the river in his beloved San Marcos.

Bob graduated from San Marcos High School in 1941, where he played football, basketball and tennis. He attended Southwest Texas State University, where he met wife Maxine, to whom he was married for 64 years. He left SWT to enlist in the Navy in 1944 during World War II. He was commissioned as an Ensign and later promoted to Lieutenant (jg) and served in the Pacific as commander of an LCT until February of 1946. After his time in the Navy, Bob completed his Bachelors in Chemistry at SWT and began work with Union Carbide in Texas City. In 1953, he moved his family to Victoria and transferred to the Union Carbide Seadrift Plant where he worked until he retired after 37 years. In retirement, he consulted for several companies on water rights, electrical rates and coal fired generation projects, representing their interests in the legislature in Austin. Bob was appointed by the governor to serve on several oversight commissions, most notably the Texas Energy Coordination Council. He attended Grace Presbyterian Church in Victoria, where he served as an Elder. In his spare time, he loved to be outdoors hunting, fishing, golfing, playing tennis and photographing flowers and wildlife.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine; and his son, William. He is survived by his daughter, Molly Abbott and her husband Terry, of Sugar Land; and his brother, Jack, of Austin. He leaves behind three grandsons, Christopher Wright, Captain, USMC and his wife Christina, Robert Lee Wright and Lane Robert Abbott; two granddaughters, Francie and Heidi Abbott; and one great-granddaughter, Yulia Wright.

A Memorial Celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 11:00 AM, on Saturday, August 24, 2013, at Grace Presbyterian Church, 3604 N. Ben Jordan St., Victoria, Texas 77901.

Honorary pall bearers will be Clarissa Woods and the staff of Colonial Oaks Assisted Living in Sugar Land, Texas, and his special caregivers Cyrilla Mark and Beatrice Dallemand.
