Milly passed away on December 30, 2022, surrounded by her family into the arms of her heavenly father. She was born on March 21, 1942 in Yakima, Washington and adopted by Elizabeth and Fred Whitted. Her parents divorced when she was a one-year-old. Several years later, Elizabeth married Don Auguston and Milly acquired a stepbrother. Fred Auguston was seven months younger. She grew up in the American Baptist Church and developed a strong faith. In 1960, Milly graduated from Renton High School. She married the love of her life, Jake Bergman, in 1964. They met when both Milly and Jake worked at Boeing. They immediately moved to New Orleans where Jake worked on the Saturn V project taking men to the moon for the first time. Milly continued her education and received her degree in Elementary Education from LSU New Orleans. They were married for 58 years.
The very best came in the next few years. Their son, Ben Hunter, was born in 1969 and their daughter, Susan Elizabeth, in 1972. Ben and his wife, Amy, and Susan and her husband Kieth Bourgeois, have been exceptional children and devoted to the needs of Milly in the last months. (Written by Milly, not the children!).
Milly taught second and third grade at Colony Bend Elementary in Sugar Land for eighteen years. While teaching, she earned her Master’s in Elementary Reading from Houston Baptist University. She dearly loved all of her students.
After retirement, her favorite activities were bible study, reading, traveling and playing bridge. She served leadership roles in women’s organizations, American Association of University Women (AAUW) and P.E.O. Milly was passionate about women’s rights and children’s education.
All of Milly’s grandchildren were born after her retirement. What a joy! Anna Bergman (2004), Kate Bourgeois (2005), Matt Bourgeois (2006) and Abigail Bergman (2007).
The family would like to give thanks to our friends and family for the cards, flowers, meals and especially your prayers during this time. We are also appreciative of the amazing staff at M.D. Anderson and Enhabit Hospice. In lieu of flowers, Milly requested donations to the M.D. Anderson Art Project, St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Planned Parenthood.
