Kay Terry of Missouri City, Texas passed away on Monday, November 14, 2022, at the age of 87 after a courageous battle of a recurrence of the ovarian cancer she had successfully defeated 40 years earlier. Kay was born to Roy Tabor Holliday and Annie Laurie Holliday in Brady, Texas on August 21, 1935, the eldest of their three children.
She attended Brady High School (BHS) in Brady, Texas, graduating in 1953. She was a member of the BHS band playing the clarinet. She also participated in the school’s annual Christmas pageant, FHA program and was nominated for Miss BHS in both 1951 and 1953. She was a member of the Brady Methodist Church and participated in their Methodist Youth Fellowship Program. In 1955 she met and married fellow Brady resident Jim Terry and they settled in Houston, Texas.
Kay put family first, always, and was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She worried over and took care of them until the very end. Her last spoken words to her children were, “Hey baby, are you okay?” She was her family’s biggest cheerleader in any activity in which they were involved. While raising her four children, you would often find her volunteering as Room Mom for their school classes, manning the concession stand at the baseball or softball fields, designing craft projects for the Cub Scout and Camp Fire Girl troops, and a host of other volunteer opportunities. She could be found on the sidelines, the stands or wherever her children needed her to be.
After her children were grown, Kay became an avid member of Bible Study Fellowship (BSF); and later, after relocating to Kerrville, Texas, she went on to serve in the BSF children’s program. Kay and husband Jim were founding members of the Evangelical Free Church of Kerrville where she continued her passion of teaching children about God’s love through her Sunday school classes.
Kay’s greatest joy in life was being Granny to her ten grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. They brought her so much joy and happiness. She loved spending quality time with them at her country home in Kerrville and was always just a phone call away if a babysitter was needed. For many years while her granddaughters were growing up, she would host them every summer at her Kerrville home for a week of fun and great adventures. This annual tradition helped shape a life-long bond between these cousins. Throughout her life Kay also enjoyed spending time antiquing, bird watching, reading, flower arranging and having lively debates with friends and family. Her family was thankful that she lived long enough to see her beloved Astros win another World Series!
She is survived by her son Kim Terry (Pam); and her daughters Tammy Booker (Richard); Lisa Andrews (Robert); and Kelley Pruetz (Steven); her sister Tamara Turner and her brother Roy Holliday (Jeanette); her grandchildren James Nicks (Anna), Bobby Andrews (Emily), Jenny Blackmon (Jason), Katie Calhoun (Jim), Danny Andrews, Ashley Kay Firkus (Adam), Leslie Jordan (Chris), Justin Pruetz (Scarlet), Kari Vest (Clint), and Emma Kay Durham (Kyle); and her great grandchildren Isaiah Blackmon, Easton Odell, Mason Odell, Journey Blackmon, Elijah Andrews, Jacey Blackmon, Ezra Andrews, Jackson Firkus, Everly Firkus, Rhett Vest, Laney Calhoun, Jimmy Calhoun, Harper Kay Pruetz, Gatlin Vest, Steven Pruetz, Walker Calhoun, Charlie Jordan, Hayden Kay Vest and Tabor Durham; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Kay was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, James C. Terry; her father Roy Tabor Holliday, her mother Annie Laurie Holliday Ludwick and her stepfather Mel Ludwick.
A memorial service for Kay will be held Monday, November 28, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at The Settegast-Kopf Company @ Sugar Creek, 15015 Southwest Fwy, Sugar Land, Texas 77478, followed by a reception from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held later in Kerrville, Texas.
