Joel Johnson Mann (Poppi to grandchildren and Uncle to nieces and nephews) passed away at home on April 15, 2023 after a long battle with cancer. His favorite phrase was “Endeavor to persevere” and he did just that with grace and courage.
Joel was born on July 23, 1947 in Longview, Texas to Edythe and Truman Mann and grew up in Edgewood, Texas. He was also raised by his stepfather, Perry McAlister. He served in the armed forces from 1969-1971, nine months of which were served in Schwabach, Germany. Joel received a Bachelor’s Degree from East Texas University, now Texas A&M-Commerce. He worked for Harford Insurance Company from 1971 to 1981 as an insurance adjuster, supervisor, and manager. In 1981, he left Hartford to form Mann Claim Service, an independent insurance adjusting firm, which he ran until his retirement in 2012.
Joel married the love of his life, Judy Donaldson Mann, on May 29th, 1976. They were blessed with two children, Jennifer and Cody. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his kids and friends, as well as skiing with Judy, his children, and friends. His favorite pastime was traveling, especially cruising with his wife, Judy.
Joel is predeceased in death by his parents, grandparents, and his brother, James Mann. He is survived by his wife, Judy; his daughter, Jennifer Lee (Jeff); his son James Cody (Jenn), and 5 grandchildren, Braydon Wiley and Shaylee Grace Pennington and Christopher James, Joshua Austin, and Seth Nicholas Mann and two bonus grandchildren, Hailey and Jacob Brownson, many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brother-in-law.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to MD Anderson Cancer Center or Wounded Warrior Project.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Settegast-Kopf Co @ Sugar Creek 15015 SW Freeway, Sugar Land, Texas on Thursday, May 11th at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow.
The Burial will take place on Friday, May 12th at 11:30 a.m. at Oak Hills Cemetery, S. Lamar St, Edgewood, TX 75117
