She was born on September 7, 1921, in Forest Hill, Louisiana, to the late George Martin Johnson, Sr. and Gertrude Dunn Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Sompayrac Jones, Jr., their daughters Patricia Jones Thyssen and Jeanie Jones Kruyer as well as brothers Clyde Johnson, James Johnson, George Johnson, Jr., Conrad Johnson and sisters Mary Evelyn Johnson, Rebecca Whittington, Ruby Porter, Vera Hendricks, Marie Rhinehart, Juanita Lyles, and Wanda Poole.
On May 20, 1942, in Lubbock, Texas, Georgia married James Sompayrac Jones, Jr. They were married 69 years. Her husband made a career in the US Air Force where he rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel. They lived in Japan, Scotland, England, Germany, and several Air Force bases in the United States. Georgia held offices on several Officers’ Wives’ Boards and was also an Air Force Family Services Volunteer.
Georgia earned a B.A. degree in English Education from Louisiana Tech where she graduated with Departmental Honors. She was a member of Churches of Christ for approximately 84 years. She taught Sunday School, World Bible School, and Vacation Bible School. She was an active Red Cross member as well as a Girl Scout and Brownie leader. Georgia was also an award-winning artist in the mediums of oil and watercolor.
Georgia is survived by sons-in-law William B. Kruyer of San Antonio, Texas, and Allen R. Thyssen of Sugar Land, Texas, granddaughters Teri Kruyer Wesson and husband Steven Wesson of Burleson, Texas, Julie Thyssen Cheshier and husband Jefferson D. Cheshier of Spicewood, Texas, grandson David Michael Kruyer of San Antonio, Texas, four great grandchildren, and sister Marge Hearn of Lebanon, Tennessee, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
