GEORGE EDWARD TENNEY, III, age 70, of Houston, passed away following an accident, on April 29, 2015, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born June 21, 1944 in Pasadena, California, he was the son of the late George and Grace Tenney. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Judith Buckridge Tenney; by his three sons, William Tenney of Houston, TX, Michael Tenney and his wife Sarah of Houston, TX, and Matthew Tenney and his wife Amy of Whitestown, IN; brothers, Philliup Tenney of North Little Rock, AR, and John Tenney of North Little Rock, AR; and seven grandchildren, John Tenney, Colin Tenney, Elizabeth Tenney, Grace Tenney, Avery Tenney, Drew Tenney, and Selah Tenney.
George graduated from North Little Rock High School and the University of Arkansas. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. George eventually arrived in Houston and founded The Tenney School with his wife Judy in 1973. Together they built a unique school designed to provide individual attention to each student. His 37 years as Headmaster were a true ministry, impacting both the lives and academics of scores of students and their families.
He was a man faithful to his commitments, possessed with a strong sense of humor, and an ardent student of Scripture. For many years he served on the Board of Child Evangelism Fellowship, was a Men’s Bible Study Fellowship leader, and was a longtime member of Sugar Creek Baptist Church.
Friends are invited to a visitation with the family from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at The Settegast-Kopf Co. @ Sugar Creek, 15015 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land (Williams Trace Exit). A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, May 6, 2015, in the Chapel at Sugar Creek Baptist Church, 13223 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, with Pastor Marty Mickelson, officiating. Before the service, a private interment will occur at Houston National Cemetery, at 11:30 PM.
