EUGENE VAUGHN GREENE, III, age 73, of Houston, Texas, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013. He was born July 4, 1939, in Lynchburg, Virginia, to Eugene Vaughn Greene, Jr., and Mildred Odell Tibbs Greene. Gene grew up in Houston in the Oak Forest area and attended Oak Forest Elementary, Hamilton Junior High, and Reagan and Sam Houston High School. After graduating from high school, he continued his education at South Texas Junior College, and the University of Houston. In 1961 he joined the U.S. Army. Basic Training was at Fort Chaffe, Arkansas, and from there he went to Red Stone Arsenal, Alabama, for training in the Niki Hercules Guided Missles Program. He was then assigned to the 89th Ordinance at Fort Shaffter, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
In 1964, after military duty, Gene began work as an accountant for the American Automobile Association (AAA), and retired in 2010 after 37-1/2 years.
Gene was preceded in death by his first wife of 31 years, Ima Lee Porter Greene. He remarried on December 12, 1992, to Nadine Louise Nystrom Sewell, at First Baptist Church, in Houston.
Gene is survived by his wife, Nadine; his children, Michael Stephen Greene, Chris Monroe Greene, and Joel Gary Sewell, Jr.; brother, Darrell Odell Greene; sister, Elizabeth “Beth” Jeunesse; his grandchildren, Kayce Cheyenne Greene, Stacey Danielle Greene, Cheyenne Louise Sewell, and Garrett Michael Sewell; and dachshund, Tid-Bit.
Interment will be held at 10:15 AM, Thursday, March 14, 2013, at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, with full military honors.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, March 15, 2013, in the Chapel @ Sugar Creek Baptist Church, 13333 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, with Pastor Marty Mikelson, officiating.
Rest in peace Gene! You are now fully healed! You loved to travel, and now you’ve flown to heaven into the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
