Margaret A Hunt (nee Murray) went to her eternal rest on Oct 1st at age 93. Thomas S Hunt age 97, joined his wife 4 days later on Oct 5th. They were married for 69 years. They each died peacefully in their sleep and were surrounded by family members around the clock during their final days.
Margaret A. Hunt (nee Murray) was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 6, 1919 to William and Margaret Murray (nee Brown), and was the last surviving of their five children (William, Mary, Edward and Walter). Marge worked for the City of New York in the Finance Department, where she met her future husband, Tom. During World War II, Marge was a quality control employee for the Norden bomb sights. She and Tom were married at the base chapel at Camp Forrest in Tullahoma, Tennessee, on June 26, 1943. She raised five children in spite of having been afflicted with multiple sclerosis in her early thirties, which she courageously battled and overcame. Marge had a big heart, loved and was loved by everyone. She was a long-term volunteer at the Helen Hayes Rehabilitation Hospital in Havestraw NY.
Thomas S. Hunt was born on December 31, 1914 in Astoria, Queens, the only child of James and Elizabeth Hunt (nee Holohan). Both parents died by his 18th birthday. During the great depression, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, working mostly in Oregon. After Tom’s National Guard Unit was activated, he was commissioned an artillery officer. He was shipped to the UK, where he joined the 989th Field Artillery Bn., XV Corps, US Third Army, commanded by Gen. George Patton. Tom earned a purple heart in Aug 1944 after being shot down by German ME-109 while acting as an aerial observer in an L-4 in support of the Third Army’s advance in Brittany, France, He subsequently fought across Europe as a battery commander of a 155 mm gun battery. After returning from the war he joined the NYC Police Department in 1946, and retired as a Lieutenant in 1976. He also continued his US Army service as a reserve officer, retiring as a Major. Tom was an active member of the Hudson Valley Chapter of the 10-13 Police Organization and the NYPD Lieutenants Association.
Tom and Marge were proud of their Irish heritage and were life-long, committed Catholics. They each had a deep faith and prayed daily for all their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They are survived by their five children: James (Catherine); Thomas; Paul (Pamela); Laura and Brian. They are also survived by six grandchildren (Jessie, Meghann, Jackie, Brendan, Amanda and Olivia) and six great grandchildren (Margeaux, Gus, Matthew, Marek, James and Eva).
They will be dearly missed by all. Their lives and deaths were an inspiration to all. They were each a model of grace, courage, love, good humor, loyalty and devotion.
Friends may call at the Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home, 177 Route 59, Suffern, NY 10901, on Friday, October 12, 2012, from 2 – 4 and 6:30 – 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial for Tom and Marge Hunt will be celebrated on Saturday, October 13, 2012 11am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 129 Lafayette Avenue , Suffern, NY 10901, followed by an Interment at Ascension Cemetery, 650 Saddle River Road, Monsey, NY 10952. Anyone wishing to make a donation in lieu of flowers may contribute in their memory to the United Hospice of Rockland County.
