Richard served in the US Navy,1951- 1954, in the Korean War. He served as an AK3 in the VP-34 Squadron, based in Trinidad. After returning stateside, Rich met and married the love of his life, Joan Elizabeth Duffy on October 6, 1956. They have been married 65 years.
Richard graduated from St. John’s University, Brooklyn, NY in 1959 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business. He was a Sales Executive for WestVaco Paper & Allied Envelope Company for more than 42 years. Rich thoroughly enjoyed his business life and entertaining. He developed many deep, long-lasting friendships with his many coworkers and customers.
Richard was a member of the United Methodist Church in Upper Saddle River, NJ.
Richard is survived by his loving wife Joan and four children, son Terrance, wife Margarida, daughter Catherine Gloria, husband Marcello, daughter Patricia Ebeling, husband Kenneth, son Christopher wife Sheila, grandchildren Heather, Richard, Patricia, Kenneth, Michael, John, Kathryn, Margaret, Peter, Thomas, Regina, Daniel, great grandchildren Lillienne, Kenneth, and Sylvie.
Rich had a passion for helping others and volunteered with the VFW as a Lifetime Member, American Legion Post 859 Suffern, Suffern Lions, Suffern Hoop Shoot, Indian Guides (Big Feather).
In retirement, Rich enjoyed leading American History discussion groups at assisted living communities, giving boxing lessons, and playing four-wall handball and tennis. His great love, besides Joan and Family, was vegetable gardening. Rich learned how to garden as a young man and continued to garden his entire life. He was especially proud of his delicious tomato and arugula crops. Richard loved following the latest boxing match, the NY Mets, Jets and St. Johnś Basketball. He enjoyed attending the US Tennis Open yearly. He also belonged to the Nyack Field Club, Nyack NY.
Most recently, Richard resided at Cedar Crest Village, in Pompton Plains, NJ with wife Joan for the last four years. He felt fortunate to be able to live a full life, continuing to garden, attending History Club meetings, and working out at the gym several days a week.
Visitation will be Saturday, December 4, 2021, from 9:30-11:30 AM at Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home, 177 Route 59, Suffern NY, 10901. Burial will follow at Rockland Cemetery, Sparkhill, NY.
