After graduating Suffern High School she graduated from the Bellevue Nursing Program.
Upon graduating from Bellevue, Mary Lou went to work as a nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern. She eventually became a nursing supervisor before moving onto Southern Westchester County BOCES, where she became the director in charge of the nursing program. Mary Lou then moved to Rockland County BOCES, where she took over as the Director of Occupational Education. Mary Lou’s spirit of giving to and helping others continued even after she retired from full-time nursing, working as supervisor for a non-profit organization in the Bronx. She continued to help others, spending her last days in the work force as a school nurse in Paterson, N.J. Mary Lou considered her work in the school as her mission and her family loved when she regaled them with stories about how she helped and guided the children in her care. While Mary Lou spent much of her time in the service of others she was also active in promoting women’s issues. She was to the Rockland County Legislature’s Committee on Women’s Issues that was chaired by long-time Rockland County legislator Harriett Cornell. Additionally, former United States Congressman Ben Gilman presented her with an award for her leadership in education. Mary Lou also volunteered for several organizations, including Hospice of Rockland, demonstrating yet again her devotion to helping others. Mary Lou had a positive impact on every person she met, whether it was through her work as a nurse, whether it was for Hospice or at Good Samaritan. She was also devoted to her family, continually putting her children and grandchildren ahead of herself.
If you knew Mary Lou, you came away impressed with how strong her will was and how adamant she could be when voicing her opinions.
