George V. Shepard, 64, of Airmont, NY passed away on August 31, 2022. Born in Massena on June 13, 1958, George was the son of Rebecca (Furman) and George W. Shepard. After graduating from High School in Malone, George attended The King's College where he earned his Bachelor's degree in English and met the future love of his life, Doreen Carlquist. George and Doreen were married on June 21, 1980. He obtained his Masters' degree in English at the City University of New York Herbert H. Lehman College maintaining a 3.97 GPA.
George's love of literature, writing and teaching became a lifelong career. He taught at St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School in the Bronx, NY in the early 1980s. In 1986, he joined the English Department at Port Chester High School where he worked until his retirement in 2017. Students remember his passionate teaching of Shakespeare's King Lear and Mark Twain's Pudd’nhead Wilson. George was also an avid French speaker and taught the International Baccalaureate film course.
In his personal time, George wrote eight articles covering vintage auto races at Lime Rock Park and Watkins Glen International for Victory Lane Magazine. He was a longtime fan of Bruce McLaren, Can Am, Indycar and F1 racing. He interviewed everyone from Mario Andretti to Carroll Shelby and met his favorite Indycar driver Dan Wheldon several times. His track-side friends easily recognized him due to his tall stature and cowboy hat.
George also expressed himself through music. He was a massive Beatles fan and he regularly played guitar and sang with his son Duncan and longtime friend Bryan. Additionally, he looked forward to dining out at different restaurants with his daughter, Kristen.
George was incredibly proud of his Scottish ancestry through his great-grandfather Stanley Robertson. With his son Duncan and daughter-in-law Chantelle, he attended the Highland Games in Scotland, CT and represented Clan Robertson.
George was best known for his wealth of knowledge on many subjects, quick-witted dry humor, and passion for his projects. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Family members include Doreen, his wife of 42 years; his son Duncan Shepard and wife Chantelle of Newington, CT; daughter, Kristen of Airmont; his sister Shari Sauter and husband Byron of Schenectady; his sister Liza Winston and husband Kip of Hodges, SC; his nephew Adam Sauter, niece Sophie Winston and numerous cousins.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 10 from 3 pm to 5:30 pm at Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home in Suffern, NY. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 5:30pm also at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Funeral home and will be used to honor George at his favorite library, the International Motor Racing Research Center (Watkins Glen, NY).
